India’s drive toward maritime self-reliance took another major leap forward with the commissioning of INS Ikshak, the Indian Navy’s latest survey vessel that promises to transform coastal and deep-water mapping operations. The third ship in the Survey Vessel (Large) [SVL] class and the first to be based at the Southern Naval Command in Kochi, INS Ikshak stands as a symbol of India’s technological innovation, indigenous craftsmanship, and commitment to safeguarding its vast maritime borders.
A Milestone in India’s Naval Modernisation Drive
Commissioned in the presence of Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, at the Naval Base in Kochi, INS Ikshak marks a major stride in India’s naval modernisation journey. The vessel is part of a Rs 2,435 crore project signed in October 2018 between the Ministry of Defence and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd., Kolkata, for the construction of four large survey vessels.
Built with over 80% indigenous content, INS Ikshak reflects the success of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative. The ship’s commissioning enhances the Navy’s ability to conduct precise hydrographic and oceanographic surveys essential for navigation, coastal development, and strategic defence planning.
The name “Ikshak,” derived from Sanskrit, translates to Guide an apt title for a vessel that will act as a sentinel of India’s maritime precision and purpose. Following the commissioning of its predecessors INS Sandhayak in 2021 and INS Nirdeshak in 2023, INS Ikshak joins the Navy’s expanding fleet of advanced, multi-role survey vessels built for the future.
A Technological Marvel Built in India
Designed and constructed by GRSE, INS Ikshak embodies cutting-edge maritime engineering. With a length of 110 metres, a displacement of 3,300 tonnes, and a crew complement of 231, the vessel is equipped to undertake full-scale coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys of ports, harbours, and navigational channels.
Its equipment suite includes a high-resolution multi-beam echo sounder, Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), and four Survey Motor Boats (SMBs). These state-of-the-art systems will generate vital data to ensure the safe navigation of both military and commercial vessels.
In addition, the ship’s helicopter deck extends its operational reach, enabling aerial surveys, transport missions, and multi-domain coordination. This addition ensures that the vessel can also function in support roles such as search and rescue operations, limited ocean research, and even as a hospital ship in humanitarian crises.
The ship’s design places special emphasis on endurance, accuracy, and flexibility traits that make it invaluable for India’s expanding maritime responsibilities across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
A Symbol of Self-Reliance and Strategic Vision
INS Ikshak represents far more than a technological feat it is a statement of India’s growing maritime self-confidence. With more than 80% of its components sourced domestically, the vessel showcases the strength of collaboration between GRSE and Indian Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
This indigenisation push is a core part of India’s defence strategy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, aimed at reducing dependence on foreign suppliers and empowering domestic industries to deliver world-class military assets.
The Navy has termed Ikshak’s commissioning a “significant milestone” in its efforts to expand survey and charting capabilities. As the first SVL-class vessel to be stationed in Kochi, it will play a crucial role in strengthening India’s maritime presence along the southern seaboard and ensuring the safe navigation of vital trade routes that connect India to global markets.
Mapping India’s Future on the High Seas
The vessel’s primary mission to conduct hydrographic surveys holds immense strategic and economic importance. These surveys help in producing accurate nautical charts essential for commercial shipping, port development, and naval operations. Moreover, the ship will also be deployed to map India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and extended continental shelf, ensuring accurate demarcation of maritime boundaries and supporting India’s claim over marine resources.
Beyond defence, the data collected by INS Ikshak will aid coastal development, marine research, and disaster management. With India’s growing emphasis on the Blue Economy, vessels like Ikshak provide the foundation for sustainable marine exploration and infrastructure expansion.
Looking ahead, the Indian Navy plans to induct Next-Generation Survey Vessels, approved by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) in 2023, to further enhance its hydrographic capabilities. These future-ready vessels will ensure that India not only keeps pace with global maritime powers but also leads in maritime innovation and regional security.
