Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has openly acknowledged long-standing differences of opinion with certain sections of the party leadership, subtly pointing toward an undercurrent of ideological divergence with the Gandhi family.
While Tharoor did not give any names, his comments reflect a pattern of quiet dissent that has defined his relationship with the high command over the years. Despite his growing stature and international profile, Tharoor has often been kept at arm’s length in key party decisions. Yet, he continues to affirm his commitment to the Congress, reiterating that any disagreements he will address it internally, not aired in public.
Acknowledges Differences Within the Party
The statement comes in the backdrop of growing internal unease within the Congress, especially regarding the role of high-profile leaders like Tharoor who have a distinct public image and independent political following.
“I have been working in the Congress for the past 16 years. Congress, its values, and its workers are very dear to me. I do have differences, but I will raise them within the party,” he said.
In the light of the ongoing bypoll for the Nilambur seat, Tharoor turned down requests to elaborate on his position. “Today I don’t want to speak it. I need to meet and talk, let the time come, and I will discuss it,” he said. Asked about his absence from the Nilambur bypoll campaign, the four-time MP revealed he was not invited as was the case during other byelections, including the one in Wayanad last year. “I do not go where I am not invited,” he said, but added that he wants the party workers’ campaign efforts to bear fruit and the UDF candidate to win from Nilambur
Operation Sindoor Sparks Controversy in Congress
The controversy intensified after Tharoor’s participation in the government’s international outreach over Operation Sindoor, which involved diplomatic briefings on the Indian armed forces’ actions. Tharoor, as Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, led a delegation to the U.S., Panama, Guyana, Brazil, and Colombia drawing criticism from sections of the Congress.
Some party leaders were reportedly upset with Tharoor’s defense of the government’s stand during these visits. The displeasure was further compounded by the fact that Tharoor was not one of the four names officially suggested by the Congress to the Centre for the delegation.
Branded ‘Super Spokesperson’ by BJP, Tharoor Remains Unfazed
Adding to the friction, a BJP member had recently referred to Tharoor as the party’s “super spokesperson,” a remark that stoked further speculation about his political leanings. Tharoor, however, has remained firm in his loyalty to the Congress, choosing not to respond to the jibe directly and maintaining that his work aligns with the responsibilities of his parliamentary role.
Rift with Gandhi Family Peaked During Congress Presidential Race
Shashi Tharoor’s long-standing ideological and strategic differences with the Gandhi family reached their peak during the 2022 Congress presidential election, when he contested against the Gandhi-backed candidate, Mallikarjun Kharge. Tharoor’s decision to run was widely seen as a direct challenge to the party high command’s grip over internal leadership dynamics.
While Tharoor maintained a respectful tone throughout the campaign, his call for reform, internal democracy, and modernization of the Congress party struck a contrast with the status quo approach represented by Kharge. His candidacy highlighted the growing divide between Congress veterans loyal to the Gandhi family and those seeking a fresh, decentralized leadership. Though he lost the election, Tharoor’s campaign gained attention for mobilizing the youth and underlining the need for change within the party. This episode publicly underscored his strained ties with the Gandhis and positioned him as an independent voice within the Congress.
Spotlight on Tharoor’s Role Amid Congress Infighting
As internal divisions come to the fore and public statements stir further debate, Shashi Tharoor’s position within the Congress party continues to draw significant attention. His independent stance, high public profile, and occasional divergence from the party line have raised questions about how the Congress accommodates senior leaders with distinct voices. Tharoor’s evolving relationship with the leadership will be key in shaping both his future and the party’s internal dynamics.
