In a chilling twist to the murder of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, his 25-year-old wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, has emerged as a key suspect — and the central figure in a dramatic interstate manhunt.
Just days after their honeymoon in Meghalaya, Raja was found dead under suspicious circumstances on May 23. What followed was a calculated escape by Sonam, who reportedly traveled over 1,000 kilometers while in burqa, raising serious questions about her involvement in the murder.
From Newlywed to Fugitive: A Journey in Disguise
According to investigators, Sonam left Meghalaya soon after her husband’s death and boarded a train back to Indore. Dressed in a burqa to conceal her identity, she then set off for Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh on May 28 — the hometown of Raj Kushwaha, a man police believe was her lover and accomplice.
Despite her efforts to remain hidden, Sonam frequently used her mobile phone during the journey, which eventually helped police trace her location.
Tracked Through Technology and Footage
The police team relied heavily on mobile phone tracking and CCTV footage to follow Sonam’s movements across multiple states. Her calls and messages to Raj Kushwaha, who worked at her family’s plywood factory, exposed their ongoing communication even after the murder.
She was finally located on June 9 at a roadside eatery in Ghazipur. After being identified, she surrendered and was placed in protective custody at a government-run women’s shelter.
Alleged Murder Plot Unfolds
Investigators now allege that Sonam and Raj Kushwaha plotted to murder Raja shortly after her wedding on May 11. The crime was allegedly carried out during the couple’s honeymoon, with the help of three hired men.
So far, four people have been arrested — including Sonam, Kushwaha, and the three alleged contract killers. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to handle the case is continuing its probe and searching for other possible accomplices.
What’s Next in the Case?
Sonam faces charges of murder and criminal conspiracy.
Police are examining whether anyone else helped her escape or knew of the plot.
A detailed forensic and digital analysis is underway to reconstruct the events leading up to and following the murder.
The case has stunned the nation, not just for the crime itself, but for the boldness of Sonam’s alleged escape plan. Authorities are now examining how a newlywed woman could orchestrate such a calculated act — and whether she had more help than initially suspected.
