The Bathinda Police have successfully solved the murder mystery of social media influencer Kamla Kaur Bhabi, whose real name was Kanchan Kumari. The police have arrested two Nihang individuals, Jaspreet Singh and Nimratjeet Singh, who were involved in the murder. During interrogation, the accused revealed their reasons for committing the crime.
However, the main conspirator, Amritpal Singh Mehron, remains at large and is being actively pursued by the authorities. The incident took place on the night of June 9, 2025, near Bhucho Mandi, where Kanchan was strangled to death, and her body was left abandoned in a parking lot. The police discovered the body on June 11, and by then, decomposition had already begun.
Timeline of the Incident
Bathinda SSP Amneet Kondal reported that Amritpal Singh had contacted Kamla Kaur a week prior to the murder, proposing a business meeting. Kanchan was invited to Bathinda on the pretext of a car promotion on June 9. At 3:30 PM, she left her house in Laxman Nagar, Ludhiana, in her car. A few hours later, in a secluded area near Bhucho Mandi, Kanchan was strangled to death in her car. After the murder, the accused left her body in the vehicle and parked it in a private hospital parking lot.
On June 11, a complaint was made about a foul smell coming from the parking lot, prompting the police to investigate. Upon checking the car, they found Kanchan’s body inside. The deceased’s mother, Girja Devi, identified the body as Kanchan’s. Following this, the police registered a case against unknown individuals. Based on CCTV footage and further investigation, Jaspreet Singh and Nimratjeet Singh were arrested on the night of June 12.
Why Did They Commit the Murder?
During interrogation, the accused revealed that Kanchan had been posting objectionable and obscene content on social media. They claimed that her videos and the use of the “Kaur” surname were hurting the sentiments of the community. They had issued a warning to Kanchan, but she refused to listen. According to the accused, they took this drastic step to protect the younger generation from the negative influence they believed Kanchan was promoting.
The police also stated that the accused were not wearing Nihang attire at the time of the murder.
Some media reports suggest that Kanchan had previously touched the beard of a Nihang, which allegedly enraged the Nihang community. This act may have been a contributing factor to their decision to plan and execute her murder.
Who Are the Nihangs?
The Nihangs are a sect within the Sikh community, traditionally known for their role in protecting the faith. They are historically recognized for their martial skills, bravery, and fearless nature. The Nihangs came into prominence with the formation of the Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth and final living Sikh Guru, in 1699.
The word Nihang originates from Persian, meaning “crocodile” or “sword.” It is believed that the Mughal rulers of India used this term to describe the fierce and valiant Sikh warriors, and the name eventually became their identity. Nihangs are typically identified by their distinctive blue robes and large, elaborate turbans. They refer to themselves as the “army of the Guru” and continue to maintain their traditional warrior lifestyle.
Main Conspirator Still on the Run
Amritpal Singh Mehron, the main conspirator behind the murder, took responsibility for the crime on social media. He claimed that Kanchan had been repeatedly warned, but she did not listen. He also issued a warning to other women, stating, “It’s not always necessary that a body is found.”
Amritpal, who had previously contested the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections on a Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) ticket, has a criminal record and is currently evading arrest. The police are continuing their search for him.
