An Air India flight, AI-171, flying from Ahmedabad to London’s Gatwick Airport with 242 passengers and 12 crew members on board, crashed shortly after takeoff near Ahmedabad airport on Thursday. Preliminary reports confirm that at least 40 people have reportedly lost their lives in the tragic accident.
Authorities have quickly established a green corridor to ensure the speedy transport of survivors and injured passengers to nearby hospitals. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Home Minister Amit Shah and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu following the crash, instructing both to visit Ahmedabad and oversee relief efforts, ensuring all possible assistance reaches those affected.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also been in contact with Gujarat’s Chief Minister and the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner, offering the full support of the central government to the state during this crisis. Meanwhile, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has departed for Ahmedabad to assess the situation firsthand.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Air India confirmed the crash, stating: “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, June 12, 2025. Air India’s Chairman expressed deep sorrow over the incident, saying: “With profound sadness, I confirm that Air India Flight AI-171, operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, was involved in a tragic accident today. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the families and loved ones affected by this devastating event. Our immediate priority is supporting all affected individuals and their families. We are doing everything possible to assist emergency responders at the scene and to provide necessary care and support to those impacted.”
