Having demonstrated the political will to punish Pakistan for its state-sponsored policy of terror in 2016 and 2019, the Modi government has, on more than one occasion, reaffirmed its intent to bring the perpetrators of the Pahalgam terror attack to justice — ‘at a time of our choosing.’ As anticipation builds for an imminent retaliation, the palpitations within Pakistan’s deep state and establishment are getting glaringly visible with every passing moment. It is visibly restless, second-guessing itself while trying not to repeat the infamous bravado of 2019, when it assured its citizenry to ‘sleep tight’ under their protection — only to be pounded by SPICE bombs.
Before moving further, it is pertinent to note that when tensions flared along Pakistan’s western border with Afghanistan, it was Islamabad who desperately sought a ceasefire on the eastern front with India. Ever since the Pahalgam terror attack, it is certain that India will not give Pakistan a free pass anymore, it has violated the much-sought after ceasefire for the 9th straight day.
Apart from the panicky reactions, the Pakistan government has now claimed that it has successfully conducted test launch of the Abdali Weapon System, a surface-to-surface missile with a range of 450 kilometers.
According to a statement by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the launch was meant to ensure the operational readiness of troops and it was part of Exercise INDUS. The move was prominently reported by Pakistani media outlets, including the state-owned broadcaster PTV.

In recent weeks, Pakistan has issued multiple Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) hinting at missile tests, though no launches had taken place until now. These NOTAMs, including one between April 30 and May 2 near India’s Exclusive Economic Zone, were intended to “show strength” but the politicians shrill remarks have been dead give away.

The Pakistani political discourse is yet to recover from the blow New Delhi has delivered in the form of suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.
On its part, the Modi government has also suspended visas for Pakistani citizens, directed a reduction in Pakistani diplomatic personnel, and shut down the Attari border crossing.
