In a major push to infrastructure and connectivity in the Northeast, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the development of a 166.80 km long Greenfield access-controlled four-lane highway connecting Mawlyngkhung near Shillong in Meghalaya to Panchgram near Silchar in Assam. The strategic corridor, part of National Highway No. 06, will be constructed at a capital cost of ₹22,864 crore under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM).
The proposed Greenfield High-Speed Corridor is a crucial component of the government’s efforts to improve transport infrastructure in the Northeast region. Of the total stretch, 144.80 km will fall within Meghalaya and the remaining 22 km in Assam. The highway will significantly ease traffic flow along the Guwahati-Shillong-Silchar route, which currently faces frequent congestion and is prone to landslides.
According to the CCEA statement, the corridor will enhance connectivity to Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, and the Barak Valley region of Assam. This new route is expected to drastically cut down travel time and distance between key cities, thereby improving logistics efficiency and ensuring smoother movement of goods and people.
Apart from strengthening inter-state transport, the corridor will also unlock the economic potential of the region. It will pass through the cement and coal-producing areas of Meghalaya, thus supporting industrial development. The project is also anticipated to spur tourism, given its connectivity to major airports in Guwahati, Shillong, and Silchar, and its proximity to scenic destinations in the Northeast.
The Shillong–Silchar corridor will traverse several districts, including Ri Bhoi, East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills, and East Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya, and Cachar in Assam. It will also connect key towns like Diengpasoh, Ummulong, Phramer, Khlieriat, Ratachera, Umkiang, and Kalain.
The new alignment integrates seamlessly with major transport corridors like NH-27, NH-106, NH-206, and NH-37, ensuring better regional and national connectivity. This highway is part of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which aims to promote multi-modal infrastructure development across India.
The government expects the project to not only decongest the existing NH-06 but also generate employment and stimulate socio-economic growth in Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. By improving access to remote areas and facilitating faster movement, the project reflects the Centre’s broader vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat, where inclusive development and infrastructure expansion go hand-in-hand. Once completed, the Shillong-Silchar corridor will serve as a vital lifeline for the Northeast, transforming regional mobility and economic dynamics.
