The Supreme Court of India on March 7, 2025, granted interim bail to Uttar Pradesh MLA Abbas Ansari in a case filed under the state Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986. However, the bench of Justices Surya Kant and N. Kotiswar Singh imposed conditions on his release so that legal norms are followed.
Abbas Ansari, Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) member of the Mau constituency, is the son of the late gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari. On August 31, 2024, an FIR was filed at the Kotwali Karvi Police Station in the Chitrakoot district under Sections 2 and 3 of the UP Gangsters Act. Charges of extortion and assault were framed against Abbas Ansari and his accomplices Navneet Sachan, Niyaz Ansari, Faraz Khan, and Shahbaz Alam Khan. Later, Abbas Ansari was detained on September 6, 2024, under this case.
The Supreme Court’s interim bail order mandates that Abbas Ansari reside at his official accommodation in Lucknow. He has to get prior permission from the concerned authorities before proceeding to his constituency in Mau. He is also required to give police authorities a day’s notice before going to court and is not allowed to leave Uttar Pradesh without a prior nod from the court. In order to ensure compliance with these conditions, the court has asked for a compliance status report from the police within six weeks.
