On Saturday (1st March), Prime Minister Narendra Modi roasted the opposition’s ecosystem often dubbed as ‘Lutyens’ gang or Khan Market Gang for following a hypocritical stance on personal Liberty. Taking a dig at them, PM Modi exposed how the opposition ecosystem cynically opposes each and every initiative that his government takes, but it had given a free pass to their friendly regimes even for grave violations and legislative excesses, assaults on personal liberty.

Speaking at the NXT Conclave 2025 in the national capital, PM Modi questioned the opposition’s ecosystem and sympathizers for maintaining silence on Archaic British-era laws that imposed restrictions on personal liberties citing an example of Britishers era law–the Dramatic Performance Act– brought out around 150 years back.
Addressing a large gathering at the Conclave, PM Modi emphasised how his government has been working with the motto of improving Ease of Living and for that it has been amending or repealing archaic British Era laws on a large scale.
He stressed the importance of it by giving the example of a legislation named as “Dramatic Performance Act”. He added that the Britishers brought the law 150 years ago which was not repealed even after 75 years of independence.
PM Modi noted, “Britishers brought a law–the Dramatic Performance Act–150 years back… This act was there even after 75 years of independence. It means if more than 10 people are dancing during a wedding, the police could arrest them along with the groom. Our government abolished that law. I have nothing to say to the government of that time and the leaders.”
He, however, took a dig at the opposition’s ecosystem and biased academia, intellegentia, and journalistic cabal by questioning their silence on such a brazen attack and infringement on personal liberties. He added, “I am surprised by the ‘Lutyens’ Jamaat’ and ‘Khan Market Gang’ that they have been silent for this many years. The people who are the ‘thekedaar’ of PIL, those who visit Courts every now and then, why they weren’t worried about the Liberty back then.”
To draw the stark comprison, he stressed, “Had Modi brought such a law (Dramatic Performances Act), just think what would have happened. Even if trolls on social media spread any such false information – ‘yeh log aag laga dete, Modi ke baal noch lete’ (they would have set fire, would have pulled out my hair). But, it’s our government which has abolished this law from the era of Colonialism.”
PM Modi highlighted that within a decade his government abolished around 1,500 such British era archaic laws, noting that they had lost their relevance. Further, in his address, PM Modi cited the another example saying that there was a time when people were jailed for cutting bamboo, because previous governments failed to recognise that bamboo is not a tree.
“From middle school, children are learning coding to prepare for fields like AI and data science. Atal Tinkering Labs are offering hands-on experiences with emerging technologies. In this year’s Budget, we have announced plans to launch 50,000 Atal Tinkering Labs,” he further stated at the NXT Conclave.
