Wokeism ruining female sports: Controversial ‘Olympian’ Imane Khelif identity confirmed as ‘man’

Wokeism ruining female sports: Controversial ‘Olympian’ Imane Khelif identity confirmed as ‘man’
Share on FacebookShare on X

Algerian athlete Imane Khelif who was once at the centre of a gender row during the Paris Olympics 2024, is in the news all over again for all the wrong reasons. Following a massive controversy over the participation of ‘male-turned-female’ athletes in women’s sports, Khelif painted herself as a victim of a vicious campaign. Now, a leaked medical report has surfaced, lending credence to concerns about her gender. The report allegedly was prepared in June 2023 by doctors at the Kremlin-Bicêtre Hospital in Paris and the Mohamed Lamine Debaghine Hospital in Algiers.

As per reports, in the purported leaked medical report, Imane Khelif’s MRI showed that the Algerian boxer lacked a uterus, had internal testes, and had a ‘micropenis’ resembling an enlarged clitoris. The development has reinforced the assertion that wokeism is fast ruining several fields particularly competitive sports for females. It has come to light that many non-performing male athletes have begun to exploit the loopholes of gender fluidity backed by the ‘liberal’ international bodies — who themselves are accused of pandering to the fringe but radical groups looking to shove the LGBTQ+ agenda — to make podium place in female sports courtesy of their physical advantages.

The Medical Report and 5-Alpha Reductase Deficiency:

The leaked medical document showed that Khelif had 5-alpha reductase deficiency, a very rare genetic condition in which a genetically male person suffers sexual development anomalies. It explained findings from an MRI and chromosomal tests that showed Khelif to have an XY karyotype-the chromosomal configuration common among males. A more careful examination showed that the child had internal testicles and a “micropenis” which looks like an enlarged clitoris. Born female, but hormone level and anatomical features clearly show that her biological structure is male. Tests to check the presence of testosterone showed that the level was almost the same as in a male, thus sparking lots of debate over her playing in women’s sports.

Understanding 5-Alpha Reductase Deficiency:

Ambiguous genitalia at birth can result from 5-alpha reductase deficiency; more often than not, they are assigned female at birth due to the appearance of their external genitalia, but during puberty, children with this condition undergo a process of masculinization characterised by muscle growth, increased body hair, and no breast development. These often give athletes an advantage in athletic pursuits, more so in women’s sports, at the levels of testosterone which grant a person much strength and endurance.

This development has brought out into the open some question of whether it is entirely fair to women’s sport when intersex or trans athletes with male-level testosterone compete against women, whose levels are bound by nature to be so much lower.

Critics argue that these athletes are born intersex or trans and hence possess an inherent advantage in the areas where physical outcomes count the most, “sports.” The case of Imane Khelif is far from the first.

One has been, though, tied to controversies in the realm of women’s boxing-Khelif-was thrown out of the 2023 World Championships for failing a test of gender eligibility on grounds that her testosterone count was outside the limits marked acceptable by the International Boxing Association, or IBA. She responded to it as one of the “big conspiracies against” her. Still, the “International Olympic Committee (IOC)” allowed her to compete at the Paris 2024 Olympics, and here she is once again in the midst of another debate on her eligibility.

The successful win of the women’s 66kg at the Paris Olympics by Khelif has further fueled this debate. As critics view the success of Khelif in the event, particularly due to her having higher levels of testosterone and having a high muscular build, this wins her a contradiction to fair competition in women’s sporting events. Prominent figures such as British TV host Piers Morgan have called for her gold medal to be revoked, saying that the first is a “biological man” and should not be able to compete with females. Morgan’s call was based on the premise that such physical advantages in Khelif from her condition are not characteristic of the typical female athlete.

‘Heartbroken’ Angela Carini had flagged similar concerns

The Khelif gender row intensified when she competed against Italian boxer “Angela Carini”. Carini, clearly dazed and battered, succumbed after just 46 seconds into the bout, handing Khelif a TKO as she landed a vicious jab that broke her opponent’s nose. Carini had voiced her reservations before the bout about the fairness of the bout, considering her opponent’s physical advantages over her. She said in the post-fight interview  “I am heartbroken.”

She said, “I went to the ring to honour my father. I was told many times that I was a warrior, but I preferred to stop for my health. I have never felt a punch like this.” In tears, Carini pulled herself out from the match, telling that the risk to her health was serious due to the injury.

This incident drew attention from some of the world’s top personas, like media personality Piers Morgan, who trailed off with questions on how fair it is to allow a built athlete to compete with women. Reem Alsalem, the UN special rapporteur on violence against women and girls, also expressed concern over the situation on social media, highlighting the physical and psychological risks faced by female athletes. The Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also commented on the issue by stating that athletes who have male genetic features should not compete against females and branded the match “not an even contest”.

Incidentally, Donald Trump’s Presidential campaign video also features Khelif’s pictures while discussing the things that have gone “wrong” under the current Joe Biden government. The voiceover artist states, “Men can beat up women and win medals.”

WHEN WE GET KNOCKED DOWN, WE DON’T STAY DOWN—WE GET UP AGAIN…

A Call for a Separate Transgender Category in Sports:

Women’s sports exist with the very purpose of providing a fair chance to those athletes who are born female, and if athletes have male-level testosterone and muscle mass, that will result in an imbalance of competition. This has been argued to require the introduction of distinct transgender and intersex categories for athletes. In this respect, a “transgender category” is called for; in such a category, athletes not falling into one of the traditional gender classifications can compete against each other without being overshadowed by the record-breaking achievements of cisgender women.
