President’s rule has been revoked from Jammu and Kashmir and the Union Territory is all set to have its elected government in the days to come.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 73 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019 (34 of 2019) read with Articles 239 and 239A of the Constitution of India, the order dated the 31st October, 2019 in relation to the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir shall stand revoked immediately before the appointment of the chief minister under Section 54 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019,” an official notification signed by President Droupadi Murmu, issued last evening, said.
The erstwhile state was put under the central rule on October 31, 2019 following its formal division into two union territories – Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
Even before this particular development, the President’s rule was already continuing there since June 2017 as the then Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti had to resign following BJP withdrawing support to her government.

Meanwhile, Vice President of National Conference (NC) Omar Abdullah met LG Manoj Sinha to stake claim to form the government, at Raj bhawan in Srinagar on Friday last week.
Omar Abdullah’s NC in alliance with the Indian National Congress won the recent Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, and he is set to be the next chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir after being elected as the leader of the coalition.
On August 5, 2019, the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019 was passed by the Parliament, dividing the erstwhile state into two union territories -Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
Article 370 of the Constitution, which accorded a special status to the former state, was also abrogated on the same day.
