On the 12th of October, the Indian Railways instituted a comprehensive and high-level inquiry after a running express train, Mysuru – Darbhanga Express rammed into a stationary goods train at Tamil Nadu’s Kavaraipettai railway station leaving as many as 19 passengers injured on the 11th of October.
Due to the impact of the collison, a fire broke out in two coaches of the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express train and also led to the derailing of 13 coaches in the Chennai-Gudur section.
There were a total number of 1,360 passengers present on Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express train during the collision but fortunately the collision resulted in no casualties. The stranded passengers were transferred to another special train to continue their journey and the injured ones have been hospitalised.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the mishap stemmed from a signaling malfunction. Railway authorities disclosed that the train crew experienced a pronounced jolt upon arrival at Kavaraipettai station. Contrary to its designated path onto the main line, the train was diverted to the loop line, subsequently colliding with a stationary freight train.
Railways in its statement said “This train, consisting of LHB coaches, passed Ponneri Railway Station at 8:27pm and was given a green signal to proceed through Kavaraipettai Station via the main line. However, upon entering Kavaraipettai, the crew experienced a heavy jerk, and instead of following the main line, as the signal had indicated, the train entered the loop line at 75 kmph and collided with the stabled goods train,”.
Sources suggested that the presence of a brake van at the rear of the freight train and speed regulation near Kavaraipettai station due to a curve likely prevented Balasore 2.0.
Restoration efforts are currently in progress at the site to resume train operations, though the pace has been hindered by rain. Railway officials indicated on Saturday morning that the process is expected to take around 16 hours to complete.
