There’s an old saying that goes, “Home is where the heart is.” But when it comes to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab, it seems their motto is more like, “Debt is where AAP is!” In a startling revelation, the AAP administration in Punjab has managed to accumulate a staggering debt of over 50,000 crores in less than two years.
The gravity of this financial crisis became apparent when Punjab’s Governor, Banwarilal Purohit, sought detailed information from Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann about how the funds have been utilized. The sharp increase in the state’s debt under the rule of AAP had raised serious concerns.
Responding to Chief Minister Mann’s earlier letter, Governor Purohit expressed his dismay at learning that Punjab’s debt had skyrocketed by approximately Rs 50,000 crore during the Aam Aadmi Party’s tenure. He was quick to request a thorough account of how this substantial sum of money had been put to use.
Interestingly, this exchange of letters between CM Bhagwant Mann and the Governor stemmed from Mann’s request for intervention regarding the rural development fund (RDF), which amounts to Rs 5,637 crore and is pending with the President and the Prime Minister.
In the wake of these developments, opposition parties in Punjab have called for an audit of the borrowings undertaken during Mann’s leadership. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) wasted no time in launching an attack on the Aam Aadmi Party. They raised questions about whether the borrowed funds had been squandered on “self-promotion” and covering the “air travel and hotel bills” of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. It seems they may have overlooked the extra security provided by Punjab Police for AAP politician Raghav Chadha’s wedding with actress Parineeti Chopra in Udaipur!

Subsequently, Partap Singh Bajwa, the Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, penned a letter to the Governor on Saturday (23rd September). In the letter, he highlighted the fact that the additional AAP debt of Rs 50,000 crore had led to a surge in the debt-to-GDP ratio, which now stands at a concerning 47.6 percent.
This alarming revelation about Punjab’s deteriorating financial condition raises important questions about the Aam Aadmi Party’s governance. AAP is known for its grand promises and a slew of freebies. Regions like Delhi and Punjab were quick to embrace these promises, but now they find themselves grappling with the harsh reality that the situation has gone from bad to worse.
The rapid accumulation of debt under the AAP’s administration is cause for great concern. It not only threatens the financial stability of the state but also raises doubts about the prudent utilization of borrowed funds. Transparency and accountability are paramount in such matters, and the people of Punjab deserve clear answers about how this debt has been incurred and what it has been used for.
As Punjab grapples with its mounting debt crisis, it is imperative that the government takes swift and responsible action to address the financial woes. The welfare and prosperity of the people should always be the top priority of any administration, and this responsibility cannot be compromised. Punjab deserves better, and it is crucial that corrective measures are implemented to steer the state away from the brink of financial disaster.
