“Vijeta,” directed by Govind Nihalani, is a 1982 Bollywood film centered around the life of a young Indian Air Force pilot who undergoes rigorous training and faces personal challenges. While the film offers a gripping narrative and explores the emotional journey of the protagonist, it doesn’t aim for strict historical accuracy. Yet, the accuracy with respect to the training and the methodology of aspirants training for the defence forces is rare to find event today.
Lakshya [2004]:
Loosely inspired by Govind Nihalani’s “Vijetya”, and set against the backdrop of the 1999 Kargil War, Farhan Akhtar’s “Lakshya” is a remarkable example of a war drama that meticulously recreates the events of the conflict. The film focuses on the personal journey of Lieutenant Karan Shergill, played by Hrithik Roshan, while also portraying the larger conflict with authenticity. The attention to detail in terms of military tactics, uniforms, and battle sequences makes “Lakshya” a standout war drama in terms of historical accuracy.
1971 [2007]:
“1971,” directed by Amrit Sagar, chronicles the events of the 1971 Indo-Pak War and the liberation of Bangladesh. The film offers a gripping portrayal of the war and the sacrifices made by Indian and Bangladeshi soldiers. Uri: The Surgical Strike [2019]:

The film is praised not only for its gripping storytelling but also for its attention to detail regarding military operations, equipment, and the covert nature of the mission.
Shershaah [2019]:
Directed by Vishnu Vardhan, this movie centered around the life and exploits of the daredevil soldier, Captain Vikram Batra. Contrary to the typical war drama template, the movie focused on almost every aspect of Vikram Batra’s whirlwind journey, including his connection with the eponymous tagline “Ye Dil Maange More!” Compared to “Uri: The Surgical Strike”, most of the army veterans were more favorable to this movie in terms of historical accuracy, which is a rare honor!

Major [2022]:
Directed by Sashi Kiran Tikka, this was also one rare authentic portrayal of a military personnel, especially when the subject was Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan. For someone who was making his debut in Hindi, Adivi Sesh handled the subject, as well as the accuracy fairly well. Not many know that apart from being an able actor, Adivi is a skilled scriptwriter as well, which reflected in this movie also!
