Every August 15, India celebrates freedom—but 1947 also carries the memory of one of the largest, bloodiest migrations in human history. Cinema and television have returned to Partition again and again, trying to make sense of what independence cost millions of ordinary families. Here’s a watchlist for this Independence Day, starting with the newest release in theatres right now.
1. Batwara 1947 (2026) — In Theatres Now
Fittingly, the freshest addition to this list hit screens on the eve of Independence Day itself. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan, Batwara 1947 reunites Santoshi with Sunny Deol nearly three decades after Ghayal and Damini. The story follows Sikandar Mirza (Deol), a man forced by Partition to leave his home — and his son — behind as he starts over in Lahore. His family is allotted a haveli vacated by a Hindu family, only to discover an elderly woman, played by Shabana Azmi, still living inside it. What begins as hostility slowly turns into an unlikely bond, with Preity Zinta returning to the screen after a seven-year gap. A. R. Rahman scores it, Javed Akhtar writes the lyrics, and Santosh Sivan shoots the scale of Partition-era Punjab. 2. Main Vaapas Aaunga (2026)
Imtiaz Ali’s Partition drama, released earlier this year, is less about the violence of 1947 and more about what love and belonging look like when a border cuts through them. Starring Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari, Vedang Raina, and Naseeruddin Shah, with music once again by A. R. Rahman and lyrics by Irshad Kamil — the trio behind Rockstar and Highway — the film is billed as the story of “a boy and a girl, but also a country.” It’s a quieter, more romantic lens on Partition than most films on this list.
3. Pinjar (2003)
Based on Amrita Pritam’s Punjabi novel of the same name, Pinjar follows a Hindu woman abducted by a Muslim man in the lead-up to Partition, and the identity, guilt, and dignity she has to renegotiate afterward. Urmila Matondkar’s performance anchors one of the most quietly devastating Partition films in Hindi cinema — it’s about the women whose stories rarely made it into the history books.
4. Garm Hava (1973)
M.S. Sathyu’s classic, starring Balraj Sahni, follows a Muslim businessman in Agra who chooses to stay in India after Partition while his family disintegrates around him — some migrate, some despair, one is lost to suicide. It’s often called one of the finest films ever made on Partition, precisely because it isn’t about the border crossing itself but about what it means to stay behind and still lose everything.
5. Tamas (1988)
Govind Nihalani’s television adaptation of Bhisham Sahni’s novel remains one of the most unflinching Partition dramas ever made for Indian TV. It doesn’t romanticize anything — it shows how a single act of communal provocation can spiral into mass violence, and how ordinary neighbors turn on each other. Banned and protested when it first aired, Tamas is still considered essential viewing.
6. Viceroy’s House (2017)
Gurinder Chadha’s English-language film takes the view from the top — the last months of Lord Mountbatten’s viceroyalty, the political horse-trading that produced the Radcliffe Line, and the human cost that decision-makers in Delhi and London barely reckoned with. It’s a useful companion piece to the more ground-level Partition dramas on this list, because it shows exactly how the line was drawn.
7. Train to Pakistan (1998)
Adapted from Khushwant Singh’s landmark novel, this film is set in the fictional border village of Mano Majra, where Hindus, Sikhs, and Muslims lived together for generations until a single trainload of dead bodies from across the new border changes everything. It’s one of the most direct depictions of how Partition violence actually unfolded in Punjab’s villages.
8. Manto (2018)
Nandita Das’s biographical film on writer Saadat Hasan Manto, played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, isn’t strictly a Partition film — but Partition is the event that breaks Manto’s world in two, forcing him from Bombay to Lahore and into the short stories (like Toba Tek Singh) that are now considered among the finest literary responses to 1947 in any language.
9. Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001)
Sunny Deol’s Gadar took a very different approach — a larger-than-life, unapologetically dramatic love story between a Sikh truck driver and a Muslim woman separated by Partition, punctuated by one of Hindi cinema’s most iconic hand-pump scenes. It’s less historically restrained than the others on this list, but it remains one of the biggest commercial hits ever made on the subject, and it’s part of why Deol keeps returning to Partition stories, including Batwara 1947 this year.
10. Khamosh Pani (2003)
A Pakistani-German-French co-production set in a Punjab village in 1979, Khamosh Pani looks backward at Partition through the eyes of a woman, Ayesha, whose past as a Hindu abductee resurfaces just as Islamist politics begin reshaping her present. Kirron Kher’s performance won major festival awards, and the film is one of the rare ones to look at Partition’s long aftershocks rather than the event itself.
11. Freedom at Midnight (2024, TV series)
Adapted from Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre’s sweeping non-fiction account, this SonyLIV series dramatizes the last days of the British Raj — Nehru, Jinnah, Gandhi, and Mountbatten all navigating the endgame of empire. It’s the closest thing on this list to a political thriller, tracking the negotiations and decisions that led directly to the events depicted in the more personal, ground-level dramas above.
12. 1947: Earth (1998)
Deepa Mehta’s film, based on Bapsi Sidhwa’s novel Cracking India, tells the story of Partition through the eyes of a young Parsi girl in Lahore, watching her nanny’s circle of friends — Hindu, Muslim, and Sikh — turn against each other as the city descends into violence. It’s part of Mehta’s “Elements Trilogy” and remains one of the most widely watched Partition films internationally.
