Indian football has often been overshadowed by the immense popularity of cricket in the country. However, in recent years, a silent resurgence is taking place, and the credit for this transformation goes to one man – Igor Stimac. With a dedicated vision and an undying commitment, Stimac is quietly leading the Indian football team towards a historic place in the FIFA World Cup.

In a country where cricket has been the undisputed king of sports, the younger generation of Indian sports enthusiasts is now looking for new heroes to cheer for. Disenchanted with the mediocrity displayed by some arrogant Indian cricketers, they are turning their attention towards football, a sport that has been gaining newfound respect in the country.

While Indian football is slowly rising in the competitive world of the sport, there is one man who stands unappreciated and ignored – Igor Stimac. The Croatian stalwart has been silently working behind the scenes to transform Indian football from its status as mere contenders in the SAFF Championship to a force to be reckoned with in international competitions.

The Unappreciated Architect

Igor Stimac’s journey to the helm of Indian football is a fascinating tale of passion and expertise. Born on September 23, 1967, in Metković, Croatia, Stimac fell in love with football at a young age. His talent and dedication led him to represent the Croatian national team, and he played as a central defender, making 53 appearances for his country.

His career highlights include playing in the 1998 FIFA World Cup, where Croatia achieved a third-place finish, and his instrumental role in Croatia’s qualification for the 2004 European Championship. Stimac was widely respected for his defensive prowess and leadership qualities on the field, making him an ideal candidate for coaching roles after his retirement from professional football.

Coaching journey of Igor Stimac began with various Croatian clubs, where he honed his skills and developed a comprehensive understanding of the game’s nuances. His coaching philosophy emphasized discipline, teamwork, and skill development, which proved to be invaluable qualities that would later benefit Indian football.

The Turning Point: Arrival of Igor Stimac in India

In May 2019, the All-India Football Federation (AIFF) appointed Igor Stimac as the head coach of the Indian national football team. This decision marked a significant turning point for Indian football. Stimac’s arrival brought a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective that was sorely needed to elevate the level of Indian football on the international stage.

Stimac’s coaching credentials, combined with his playing experience at the highest level, commanded respect from the players and the football community. Under his guidance, the Indian team underwent a transformation, focusing on a possession-based playing style and tactical discipline. He introduced innovative training methods and worked closely with the players to enhance their technical abilities.

The Catalyst: SAFF Championship and InterContinental Cup

The SAFF Championship held in 2019 and the InterContinental Cup in 2020 were pivotal tournaments that showcased the progress made under Igor Stimac’s leadership. The SAFF Championship, held in Bangladesh, witnessed India’s impressive performances, culminating in their seventh title triumph. The Indian team’s disciplined and cohesive gameplay demonstrated the positive impact of Stimac’s coaching philosophy.

In 2023, India’s performances at both InterContinental Cup and the SAFF Championship proved that the country has come a long way in the field of football. Playing against teams like Lebanon and Kuwait, that once took them for a ride, India

The Vision: From SAFF to FIFA World Cup

While the SAFF Championship and the InterContinental Cup marked important milestones for Indian football, Stimac has bigger dreams. He is fixated on a single goal – to take the Indian senior men’s team to the FIFA World Cup. In his own words, Stimac confessed his restlessness and obsession with this vision. He understands the long journey ahead, but he remains resolute in his determination to get closer to his dream.

In his pursuit of excellence, Stimac has identified key areas that need improvement. These include strengthening the grassroots development programs, enhancing the scouting network, and providing more exposure to young talent through international tournaments and friendly matches. He believes that nurturing young players from a tender age is crucial to building a strong foundation for the future of Indian football.

The Syed Abdul Rahim Connection

Comparing Igor Stimac to Syed Abdul Rahim, the physical education instructor who led India to a gold medal at the 1962 Asian Games and a semifinal finish at the Melbourne Olympics, highlights the magnitude of Stimac’s ambition for Indian football. Rahim’s achievements were historic and set a benchmark for Indian football. Now, Stimac aims to take Indian football to the unthinkable top 80 finish in FIFA rankings and secure a top 10 spot in the Asian rankings.

Stimac’s targets are not just ambitious aspirations. They are rooted in his profound belief in the potential of Indian football. He sees the talent and dedication among the players and is determined to provide them with the necessary support to succeed on the global stage.

Challenges and the Path Forward

While Stimac’s vision and dedication inspire confidence, there are challenges on the road to achieving his goals. Indian football faces tough competition from established footballing nations in Asia. Countries like Japan, South Korea, Iran, and Australia have formidable teams and footballing infrastructure. Overcoming these obstacles requires consistent efforts and strategic planning.

To make Stimac’s dream a reality, both the government and the Indian audience must join hands to provide the necessary support and foster a footballing culture that celebrates the game and its heroes. Investment in grassroots development, infrastructure, and coaching programs is essential to nurture young talent and provide them with opportunities to excel. Additionally, the Indian audience must show unwavering support for the national team, attending matches, and vocally cheering for the players.

Igor Stimac’s commitment to Indian football is driving a silent resurgence in the sport, capturing the imagination of the nation’s youth. His relentless pursuit of taking the Indian senior men’s team to the FIFA World Cup reflects his unwavering dedication to the sport and the country. To make Stimac’s dream a reality, both the authorities and the Indian audience must join hands to provide the necessary support and foster a footballing culture that celebrates the game and its heroes. With this collective effort, Indian football can rise to new heights and achieve the unthinkable – a place among the world’s footballing elite. As the journey continues, the nation eagerly awaits the day when India stands tall on the grandest stage of them all – the FIFA World Cup.
