Bollywood remake: Undoubtedly, Bollywood has earned the infamous moniker of “Remakewood” for its penchant to regurgitate remakes at the drop of a hat.
However, what few focus is the way other industries are doing the same. Only recently, it was announced that some Tamil makers will Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 is one of the most successful films of 2022. The film starred Kartik Aaryan, Kiara Advani, and Tabu in the lead roles. While we usually say that Bollywood filmmakers remake a lot of South films, now Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 will be remade in Tamil.
But, before Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, many Hindi films have been remade in South languages. Here are some of them: –
Andhadhun
The film, itself inspired by a French short film “The Pianist”, shocked masses and critics alike when it hit the screens in October 2018. Following the success of the same, the film was remade in several languages. While “Bhramam” [remade in Malayalam] and “Maestro” [remade in Telugu] released on OTT, the Tamil version, “Andhagan” shall release in theatres.

Oh My God
“Oh My God” needs no introduction. Directed by Umesh Shukla, the movie, based on a Gujarati play, was a surprise hit at the box office. Interestingly, the movie was remade in Telugu as “Gopala Gopala” and in Kannada as Mukunda Murari. Gopala Gopala starred Venkatesh and Pawan Kalyan in the lead roles, and Mukunda Murari featured Upendra and Kichcha Sudeep.
Munna Bhai franchise
Munna Bhai MBBS was a rage amongst the masses when it hit the theatres in late 2003. It was remade in Tamil as Vasool Raja MBBS and starred Kamal Haasan in the lead role. The Telugu remake Shankar Dada M.B.B.S. starred Chiranjeevi in the lead role, and Upendra played the lead role in the Kannada remake Uppi Dada M.B.B.S. Even Lage Raho Munna Bhai was remade in Telugu as Shankar Dada Zindabad.
A Wednesday
Now this is one film, that was remade by not just the regional, but also the Hollywood as well. The sleeper hit, directed by Neeraj Pandey, was remade in Tamil and Telugu as Unnaipol Oruvan and Eenadu respectively. Both the film starred Kamal Haasan as one of the leads. Interestingly, “A Common Man”, starring Ben Kingsley was also based on the same.

3 Idiots
Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi starrer 3 Idiots is one of the best films made on education and friendship. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the movie was remade in Tamil as Nanban and it starred Vijay, Jiiva, Srikanth, Ileana D’Cruz and Sathyaraj in the respective roles.
While the list is infinite, one thing is for certain: No film industry is cent per cent original. It is the way they present their movies that make them different. While the Bollywood has gained immense criticism for their lack of originality, it would be rather unfair to treat them as the sole reason behind the downfall of the Indian film industry, since some of the remakes down South weren’t even that entertaining, forget setting the cash registers ringing.
