Anantapuram Veerabhadra Temple – Guide

Veerabhadra Temple is located in Anantapuram district of Andhra Pradesh which is also known as “Lepakshi Temple”. This temple is one of the famous and mysterious temple of India, Veerbhadra Temple is famous for its architecture and hanging pillars which will leave you in awe for a moment. For this reason, Lepakshi Temple is also known as “Hanging Temple”. Another thing that makes this temple unique is the footprints of Maa Sita. This temple get a glimpse of the history of the Vijayanagara Empire through pictorial representations.

History of this Temple

The Anantapuram Veerabhadra Lepakshi temple was built in 1538 by two brothers named Virupanna and Veeranna in the Vijayanagara Empire. Virupanna’s son was blind, and it is said that he acquired blindness while playing around the Shivalinga in the temple. Blamed by others for using the royal treasury. Distressed by the false accusation, he took the punishment and cast his eyes on the walls of the temple. Hence, the place got its name Lape-Akshi which means village of the blind. It is believed that there are still traces of blood from the eyes on the wall of the temple.

Best time to visit Anantapuram Veerabhadra Temple

10 day festival is celebrated in this temple in the month of February. This festival is also known as the car festival and during this festival, large number of devotees come in this temple.

Durgamma Festival– This festival is celebrated in the hindu month of Bhadrapada. It is a four-day-long festival. During this festival a fair is also organised in this temple.

Masi Brahmmotsavam is the festival which is celebrated in the months of February-March and Tirukarthikai is celebrated in the month of November-December.

Anantapuram Veerabhadra Temple Timings

Anantapuram Veerabhadra Temple opens at 6:00 AM in the morning and close at 6:00 PM in the evening. Morning aarti is performed at 7:00 AM in the morning and evening aarti is performed at 5:00 PM in the evening.

This is the nandi of the main Lepakshi Temple. This is located at the entrance of the temple.

This temple is located at a distance of few kms away from the Veerbhadra Temple.

Sri Bhadrakali Sametha Veereswara Swamy Devasthanam

This temple is dedicated to both maa kali and Veerbhadra. This temple is located at a distance of about few kms away from the main temple.

Sri Agora Veerabhadra Swamy Temple

This temple is dedicated to sri Veerbhadra. This temple is few kms away from Lepakshi Temple.

By Train- The nearest railway station from Anantapuram Veerabhadra Temple is Hindupur railway station which is at a distance of 12 kms away from this temple. From here you can easily reach this temple by using local transport services or taxi.

By Road- Lepakshi Temple is connected to many major cities of Andhra Pradesh and India through Hindupur. There are many private as well as state owned buses that connect Hindupur to many major cities of the country. After reaching at Hindupur, you can reach this temple by taxis or buses.
