History of this Temple
Lanka’s king Ravana was the ultimate devotee of Mata Kheer Bhavani. He had pleased the mother with his penance and meditation. However, when Ravana got involved in bad deeds due to his arrogance, then the mother started getting angry on him. But the mother became completely angry with Ravana when he abducted mother Sita.
At the same time, when Hanuman ji reached Lanka in search of Mata Sita, Mata Kheer Bhavani asked Hanuman ji to take her to some other place. Following the order of Mata, Hanuman ji brought the idol of Kheer Bhavani Mata from Lanka and installed it in Tulmul village, 14 km from Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir.
The temple of Kheer Bhavani Mata is also famous for its mysterious pool. It is said that whenever a natural calamity hits Jammu and Kashmir, the water of the kund changes its colour. In the event of a natural calamity, the water of the kund turns black. This indicates that some calamity is about to come in Jammu and Kashmir.
During the floods of 2014 and the Kargil war, the colour of the water of the kund turned black and red respectively. However, this Kund also indicates the progress of the valley. When Article-370 was removed, the water of the kund turned green. This green colour of water is considered a symbol of progress and prosperity of Kashmir.
