Swamimalai Temple, Tanjavur – Overview

Swamimalai Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Murugan (Kartikeya). This temple is located in Tanjavur on the banks of river Kaveri near Swamimalai at a distance of 5 kms from Kumbakonam and also this temple is located at a distance of 250 kms from Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, India.

Swamimalai Temple of the main deity Swaminatha Swami is situated at a height of 60 feet (18 m) on the top of the small hill and the temple of mother Meenakshi (Parvati) and father Shiva (Sundareswarar) is also located at the bottom of the hill.

History of this Temple

According to Hindu sources, Shiva’s son Murugan (Kartikeya) used to recite his father’s Pranava mantra Om at the same place and hence this place is named Swaminatha Swami Temple.

Parantaka Chola I is believed to have made some improvements to this temple. But during the Anglo-French war between Hyder Ali and the British in 1740, the temple suffered a lot of Puhuchai damage. Presently the temple is maintained by the Religious and Endowment Board of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Swamimalai Temple is one of the major temples of Murugan, associated with different phases of his life. According to Hindu beliefs, Swamimalai is the place where Murugan explained the meaning of the Pranava Mantra to Shiva as a child. The cult of Murugan is a matter of pride for the Tamil people.

This temple opens at 5:30 am in the morning and close at 9:00 pm in the evening.
