Barsapara Cricket Stadium – Overview
Barsapara Cricket Stadium, officially known as Dr Bhupen Hazarika Cricket Stadium and popularly known as Assam Cricket Association Stadium, is a cricket stadium in Barsapara, Guwahati, Assam, India.
The cost of the entire stadium project is over Rs 2300 crore. It was inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on 10 October 2017. Barsapara Cricket Stadium is the 49th international cricket stadium in India. The first international cricket match played here was between India and Australia T20I. It is a new stadium which hosts domestic and international cricket matches.
In the year 2010, the Assam Cricket Association renamed the stadium in respect of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. Barsapara Stadium is the largest sports stadium in Northeast India.

Barsapara Cricket Stadium – History
The foundation stone of the stadium was laid by the then chief minister Tarun Gogoi in June 2004 and he laid the foundation stone of the clubhouse and Barsapara Cricket Stadium stands in July 2007 in the presence of the then BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah.
The Assam Cricket Association was allotted 59 acres of land by the state government and after clearing a portion from encroachers, the Assam Cricket Association started the construction in the year 2006. The stadium which was initially a dumping ground. In 2009, the Assam Cricket Association officials were hopeful that within a year they would be able to complete the remaining work on the stadium which would be of an international standard.
On 4 November 2012, the first match which is played on this stadium ground is East Zone Senior Women’s Interstate One Day Championship match between Assam and Odisha.

Facilities in this stadium
With a capacity of 40,000, Barsapara Cricket Stadium is one of the best stadiums in the country with all modern facilities. Apart from a cricket field with covered seating all around, the stadium will also have necessary infrastructure like indoor practice wickets, swimming pool, gym etc. Two of the four grandstands including the players’ pavilion and state-of-the-art media center and the ground have 24-hour water sprinkler facilities.
Chlorophyll (India) Sports Turf Technology & Construction Pvt Ltd has constructed the main field covering approximately 16800 Sq. Meters, which is first of its kind in the entire country, as it is 100% sand based with USGA perched water table profile is installed. Detailed subsoil drainage network on grid pattern. The area is subject to very heavy rainfall, so the subsoil drainage system has been designed to withstand cloudbursts, As the play can start within minutes of the rain stopping.

In addition, the field is irrigated with low voltage automatic satellite controlled pressurized pop up irrigation system having 82 nos sprinkler heads and 6 nos quick coupling valves required for hand watering wicket square etc. There are eight pitches on the wicket in the main area. There are ten pitches on the square, and a separate practice wicket area covering over 2000 square metres. The curators among them are Mr. Barsamangal Baruah and Mr. Ratul Das. The entire stadium project will cost more than Rs 2300 crore.
