‘De-recognise AAP’: Politicising civil servants will end Kejriwal’s game in Gujarat

There is a famous saying, ‘with great power comes great responsibility’. Unfortunately, Politicians often forget this important trait of accountability. They consider themselves above the law and their deeds reflect the same.

Apparently, AAP National Convenor and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal is facing massive backlash for his alleged violations of Representation of Peoples Act, 1951 and politicising public servants.

Trouble mounting for AAP and Arvind Kejriwal

AAP Supremo Arvind Kejriwal is desperately trying to gain electoral success in Gujarat. For that, he is making aggressive pitches to woo voters. Apparently, his desperate appeal to the government officials has drawn massive flakes from a group of retired civil servants.

Reportedly, 57 retired bureaucrats and diplomats have written a letter to Election Commission of India (ECI) urging it to de-recognise AAP as a political party.

The letter stated, “We request the ECI to withdraw the recognition of the AAP as a recognised political party in light of its flagrant violations under Order 16A of the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968 as the conduct of the National Convenor of AAP has breached the Model Code of Conduct and is also in grave violation of provisions of the Representation of Peoples Act, 1951”.

The signatories to the letter accused AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal of making “a veiled effort to utilise officers of the state to further the personal electoral prospects of the AAP under the cloak of innocent appeals”.

Is AAP misusing government machinery for personal gains?

The disgruntled civil servants claimed that poll pitches to public servants are a deliberate and calculated appeal made by the AAP. It is done with the malicious intention of utilising government machinery for one’s own political victory.

The letter hit hard at AAP for using corrupt practices and trying to misuse the government machinery for its electoral benefit which is specifically barred under the Representation of the People Act, 1951. They added that letting such unconstitutional appeals go unchecked will set a grave precedence for the nation.

The letter further added, “Mr. Kejriwal called upon public servants, including policemen, home guards, anganwadi workers, state transport drivers and conductors and polling booth officers, to aid the AAP in the upcoming State elections.”

It categorically mentioned that Civil as well as public servants are non-partisan and hence disapprove blatant efforts to politicise civil, public servants.

The retired civil servants lambasted Delhi CM for wrongfully equating them as the employees of political parties in power. They reminded AAP that public servants do not owe any allegiance to political parties.

The letter alleged that by disingenuously inducing public servants to “work for the AAP”, AAP Supremo Kejriwal is provoking civil servants to breach the Code of Conduct.

Monetary Persuasion to work for AAP

The retired civil servants stated that AAP Supremo Kejriwal tried to lure public servants by promising freebies in exchange for their allegiance to AAP. The letter alleged that he persuaded public servants to act in contravention of the principles and ethics by which they are governed.

Persuading them to act as agents for AAP in the upcoming elections is totally unacceptable and unconstitutional.

As per the letter, Delhi CM Kejriwal made a poll promise that AAP will award public servants with free electricity, free education, new schools, transfer “thousands of rupees” to the bank accounts of the women of their households and fulfil their additional demands.

Further, the letter added that the election process must remain untainted and free from prejudice. It accused that these blatant appeals by Mr. Kejriwal subvert electoral democracy and undermine public service.

This new development categorically highlights that AAP has no takers in Gujarat. It is finding it hard to build a strong organisational structure right before the wee hours of elections in the state.

This is evident from their desperate appeal to civil, public servants to work for AAP which violates the constitutional rules and norms. It is safe to say that, the Gujarati voters have publicly refused Arvind Kejriwal’s freebie announcements.

Furthermore, his trump card, Manish Sisodia, a sacrificial lamb to gain sympathy votes, was called out before it could fold in his favour. However, in its desperation, AAP shoots itself in the foot.

Politicising civil servants will only complicate AAP’s chances of dethroning the Congress and becoming Gujarat’s second largest party.
