In terms of shamelessness, Kejriwal’s AAP knows no bounds

For a strong and vibrant democracy, there has to be mutual respect and coordination in matters of national interest, between the government and opposition. The prime example of this was witnessed when the then PM P. V. Narasimha Rao asked opposition leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee to represent India’s interest on the global stage. But sadly, this great tradition is now becoming obsolete. While several leaders have been accused of degrading politics, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and his party seem to ace this deplorable stream of politics.

Name-calling and use of derogatory words

Nowadays Politicians have no civility left when they speak about their ideological opponents. They fail in maintaining public decorum. Use of unparliamentary words against rivals is fast becoming a norm. Even senior politicians indulge in smear campaigns against their opponents. Political accusations fly left, right and centre without any logical base to them. The unfortunate thing is that it is not only happening in local bodies or remote areas of the country but also in the capital, Delhi.

The Delhi AAP government has gone berserk in its frustration. To oppose the investigation against its officials, leaders and ministers it is stooping to new lows in its commentary against the Modi government. AAP’s petty politics is evident from the fact that they are now manipulating videos to corner the Modi government. In an act of utter shamelessness, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh planted a doctored video to accuse PM Modi of disrespecting the outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind.

AAP MP Sanjay Singh made a tweet in which he posted a cropped video of outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind’s farewell. In this tweet, he apologised to the outgoing President for the so-called insult by PM Modi. He insinuated that the Modi government was being arrogant and the PM didn’t greet the outgoing President. He said that as President Kovind’s tenure was going to be over, the ruling government would not even look at him. Their blatant and petty act was called out immediately as in the original full video PM had gracefully greeted outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind. Moreover, there was never a question of disrespect as it was the Modi government who had elected Honourable Ram Nath Kovind as India’s first Dalit President.

— Sanjay Singh AAP (@SanjayAzadSln) July 24, 2022

It is a matter of great shame for the country that MPs of the House of Elders (RS) are blatantly indulging in fabrication and manipulation to score a few political brownie points.

When the doctored video was busted, the AAP party with its official Twitter handles started trending a derogatory hashtag against PM Narendra Modi. They should have refrained from indulging in pedestrian politics as even in fiercest opposition they should have respected the reputed chair of PM. With such street-level thuggery, it is setting a wrong precedent for people to follow. They should have known that public representatives and political parties have a duty to refrain from such acts that weaken democracy.

However, this is not a new thing for the AAP party. Its National convenor and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has time and time again brought disrepute to his profession. He has many times used the offensive word “Thulla” for Police officials. He often uses derogatory and offensive words for top leaders of the opposition parties including PM Narendra Modi. His speeches also include nasty personal attacks on rivals and have no iota of civility or respect for his ideological opponent. On top of that, he has on multiple occasions played the victim card after facing backlash for his reprehensible and nasty commentary.

In a separate incident, it shamelessly put up a poster of Bangladeshi Islamic scholar Maulana Mahmudul Hasan alongside photos of Indian freedom fighters. This audacity to honour a Bangladeshi backfired on them. It invited the wrath of the general public for demeaning the Indian freedom struggle and great patriots of India. Later, they began an overdrive to justify its shameless act. Firstly, the party removed the photo of the Bangladeshi scholar. Later, the party claimed that it wanted to include Indian scholar Mahmud Hasan Deobandi at the ‘freedom fighter fountain’ in Delhi’s Jamia Nagar.

It is to be noted that Deobandi is one of the co-founders of Jamia Millia University in Delhi’s Jamia Nagar. Either the party members need a lesson on the Indian freedom struggle and freedom fighters or it may be an act of appeasement politics. As it happened in the area of notorious AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan. Many political analysts blame the party for indulging appeasement politics with this grave “goof up”.

The Aam Aadmi Party which came to reform politics has a shameful track record in conducting its politics. It should not forget that the public hates politicians who indulge in a disgraceful commentary. Indecency in public life has been and will always detach people from such vile politicians. So better for all parties to learn some civility and respect their opponents and not be personal in cornering their rivals and it seems that AAP needs such lessons the most.
