Clearing judicial backlogs, the Yogi way

The jurisprudence of retributive justice proposes the punishment of lawbreakers and the compensation of victims. Justice is important as it helps the state to maintain its legitimacy and ensure the rule of law in society. However, when the same system of rule of law fails to work on the ground, it creates discontentment against the system and destabilises society. So, it is imperative that the law must punish those who break it.

But, the same criminal justice system in India has failed to provide any substantiate results since independence. Thus, in the modern digital age, technologies are being used to bring efficiency and ensure effectiveness in the judicial process.

UP Tops in Ensuring Efficient Justice

According to a report, Uttar Pradesh with 9.12 million cases has topped India in the number of disposal and entry of cases through the e-Prosecution portal. Reports suggest that till the end of August 2022, where UP topped the list, states like Madhya Pradesh (2.31 million), Bihar (8,59,000), Gujarat (4,87,000), and Chhattisgarh (3,83,000) ranked second, third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the digital handling of criminal cases.

UP, with over 4,70,000 entries, also topped in the online disposal of cases on the e-Prosecution portal. Where MP (1,70,000) and Gujarat (1,25,000) ranked second and third, respectively, in the list.

E-Prosecution Portal

The e-Prosecution portal is the digital handling of criminal cases established under the Digital India Mission. Managed by the central government, it is the portal established with the initiative of home, IT, and law ministries for helping courts and criminal prosecution systems to quickly dispose of criminal trials in heinous crimes.

Reducing the manual handling of cumbersome files establishes a digital connection between the court, police, advocate, and others. It ensures that every organization or individual related to the case is informed through SMS and mail, and reaches the concerned process of prosecution on time. It maintains a database of the whole criminal justice system. The portal supports the Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System which disseminates the data among courts, police, jails and forensic organisations to help them in the quick prosecution of criminals.

Yogi’s Ram Rajya

Started two years ago, the e-Prosecution Portal is an attempt by authorities to bring an efficient criminal justice system. Although there are numerous such programs that the central government brings for states to ensure social justice. But, unwillingness on the part of many state governments fails to perform at par with intended goals.

However, UP under Yogi Adityanath is establishing new standards of administrative efficiency in the country. From business to social justice, in every domain of business, UP has left many states behind. Working on the prime poll promise of his party, Yogi Adityanath has brought the rule of law to the state.

In a country where 4.70 crore cases are pending in various courts, it must be a boon to envisage an efficient process to quickly dispose of these cases. UP’s effort in the digital transformation of the criminal justice system is highly appreciable. According to the National Crime Records Bureau data, the e-Prosecution Portal has also helped the state in topping the list of the highest number of convictions for crimes against women and cybercrime cases.

It is truly a remarkable achievement for UP. Earlier, the state was infamous for crimes and lawlessness. From topping the list of crimes rate to topping the list of prosecution of criminals, UP has come a long way under the Yogi government.
