- ‘Asia’s richest man Gautam Adani seeks majority stake in India’s NDTV’
- ‘Has Gautam Adani trapped NDTV?’
- ‘Gautam Adani executes a hostile takeover of NDTV’
NDTV acquisition: These are the common headlines of the articles being published regarding Gautam Adani’s take over of left leaning media portal NDTV. There has been an attempt from the entire cabal to paint Gautam Adani’s acquisition of NDTV red, alleging that it endangers press freedom in the country. The recent entrant in the club is Washington Post.
NDTV acquisition: An excuse for WaPo to target India
An article published in the Washington Post with the headline, “Fears for independent media in India as tycoon eyes major news channel.” It was shared on various social media platforms with share text, “Gautam Adani, Asia’s richest man and an ally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, made a hostile bid for NDTV in a move that could reshape India’s media landscape.”

The WaPo article focused on building a narrative not only against Asia’s richest business man Gautam Adani, but also PM Modi. It peddled the plot that PM Modi through his allies wants to control the ‘narrative war’ and enhance Right-Wing propaganda in the nation.

The biggest irony in the world!
The fact that WaPo is worried about world’s 4th richest man buying a media house, when it is owned by world’s 3rd richest man, Jeff Bezos is the greatest irony. So, Jeff Bezos should be concerned that WaPo may believe tomorrow that Bezos’ ownership of WaPo poses a threat to independent journalism.
Also, Jeff Bezos’s WaPo is not the only organisation worried about press freedom in India. The Guardian reported the bid with headline, “Media Freedom fears in India after Modi ally Adani buys 29% stake in NDTV”. According to the story, NDTV was one of the media outlets prepared to criticise Narendra Modi’s government, is facing a hostile takeover by the country’s richest man. Whereas, Reuters’ reported, “Takeover of NDTV by India’s richest man worries journalists.” Well, any layman can understand why Adani’s takeover of bankrupt NDTV would worry journalists.

NDTV was never a crusader for independent journalism
To add on, anyone who thinks that NDTV represented free and independent journalism might need to attend high-school once again. The NDTV has always prostrated at the ‘lotus-feet’ of Congress and the Left Parties. It has often sold fake news, recently claiming India has sent a private jet for ousted Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksha, only to delete it after being called out by the MEA.
For all the naive leaders, journalism in itself is an anti-establishment profession, but a stand against the current administration does not fulfil the criteria of ethical journalism. Journalism’s purpose is to be the ‘voice of the voiceless’ andtake the country’s growth forward, which it failed to accomplish. However, NDTV was so busy in its anti-Modi rant that it even appreciated Pakistan to show India in bad light. It failed to understand that anti-Modi propaganda does not make you pro-India, and the idea of independent journalism is a far-fetched idea for NDTV.
