‘Not Everything You See Is True’: LSG Clarifies Viral Goenka–Pant Video; Lalit Modi Slams Owner as ‘Loser’

LSG Tried To End Sanjiv Goenka Backlash With 'True Story' Video

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) came under the media spotlight following a viral video showing a post-match interaction between team owner Sanjiv Goenka and captain Rishabh Pant after their IPL 2026 loss to Delhi Capitals on April 1.

The first 17-second clip, widely shared on social media, showed an animated exchange between Goenka and Pant, sparking debates about the owner’s conduct and team management style.

Following the backlash, LSG released a second video on April 2 at 7:32 pm on social media platform X. This 55-second clip offered a very different perspective.

In the video, Goenka, his wife Preeti Goenka, coach Justin Langer, and other team officials are present as Pant approaches.

Goenka warmly embraces Pant, patting his back multiple times. The video shows Pant shaking hands with team members while everyone engages in light-hearted conversation and laughter.

The franchise captioned the post, “What you see is not always the full truth. These are the real, unfiltered moments after the match, when the cameras don’t stop.”

Social Media Speculation and Context

The first clip drew comparisons with a similar incident during IPL 2024, when Goenka was seen in a heated exchange with former LSG captain KL Rahul after a defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad.

In that instance, Goenka appeared visibly upset, while Rahul maintained composure. Former players and fans had criticised the public nature of that discussion, suggesting such conversations should take place behind closed doors in the dressing room.

Social media reactions to the 2026 clip were immediate. While some fans questioned the authenticity of the clarification video, others noted that post-match presentations visible on the stadium’s giant screen indicated it was shot at the same time.

Experts and observers pointed out that short clips on social media often distort context, creating misleading narratives about heated moments.

Lalit Modi Criticises Goenka

Former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi publicly criticised Goenka, calling him a “loser” and saying he should be banned from owning an IPL franchise. Modi’s remarks were made while reposting a comment by former England captain Michael Vaughan, who wrote: “One game into the tournament… no need for this.”

Modi said: “I told you this guy @DrSanjivGoenka, owner of @LucknowIPL, is a complete loser and joker of the highest order. I am seriously embarrassed by his behaviour. I created the @IPL for fans and players alike, not for this to happen every time, every year. If I was still chairman and commissioner, I would have banned him immediately and made him forfeit his ownership of the team forever. He is a complete pompous clown. There is a clause in the franchise agreement for this exact issue. #BCCI implement it—keep integrity above all. Sucking up to the powers that be is not the way to allow him to get away. Fans and players alike will remember.”

Owner Supports Pant, Emphasises Team Spirit

Despite the controversy, Goenka expressed support for his captain and the squad. On X, he wrote: “This is a long season, and moments like these are part of building something meaningful. I have full confidence in our captain and the team to respond with strength. To our fans, thank you for your support at Ekana today. We will come back stronger. The story of @LucknowIPL this season is far from written.”

Critics have highlighted that owning a sports franchise carries enormous responsibility, beyond profit or business interests. Analysts noted that while Goenka is highly involved in team operations, public displays of frustration—such as the finger-pointing captured in the first viral clip—can reflect poorly on the franchise and create unnecessary controversy.

In the first video, Goenka appears pointing a finger at Pant while speaking. His wife Preeti, coach Langer, and other team officials are also visible. Though the exact conversation remains undisclosed, social media quickly turned critical, mocking Goenka and raising questions about his temperament in handling defeats.

The two videos together offer contrasting perspectives, one appearing tense and confrontational, the other warm and supportive—highlighting how social media can sometimes amplify short moments out of context.

The incident has reignited debates over the role of team owners in franchise cricket, fan expectations, and the boundaries between management and players during high-pressure moments in the IPL.
