Law and Order is the basic minimum for a civilised society. As without strict enforcement of law and order, only chaos and anarchy prevail. The situation of law and order seems to be worsening as the Islamist mobs have rampaged and terrorised the streets of Bengal. But following a narrow minded appeasement politics, the Bengal government has in a way given a free pass to the rioters to create anarchy and chaos.
Law and Order in Bengal is in shambles
Violent protests took place in several states over alleged remarks on Prophet Mohammed. While other states took stern actions against rioters and perpetrators of violence, Bengal CM urged the rioters to do it in some BJP ruled states.
Rather than taking strictest possible action against them, Mamata seemed sympathetic to the cause of the rioters. The situation in Bengal worsened to such an extent that even Police stations were heavily attacked. Apparently, the Islamist mob attacked Police station in Nadia and pelted stones.

Though the Nadia police did not comment on the attack and violence, a local police officer on condition of anonymity said that the protesters also damaged a number of shops during stone pelting.
The officer said, “Trouble began after a group of around 200 people, who took out a procession in Bethuadahari, alleged that objectionable remarks were passed at them by some local people. They pelted stones that damaged a number of shops”.

The West Bengal Police claimed to arresting more than 100 alleged rioters for rioting, arson and spreading communal hatred. But, the situation of law and order was far away from normalcy and gory scenes could be seen at several places.
The Police tweeted, “West Bengal police has arrested more than 100 persons in specific criminal cases registered under stringent sections of law for road blockade, rioting, arson damage to public property and spreading communal hatred. Nobody who indulges in any of these crimes will be spared”.

Opposition staged a sit-in protest
The principal opposition party BJP lambasted the incompetence of the state government in tackling mindless violence at the hands of fanatic radicals. The party leaders staged a sit-in protest to raise voice against the deteriorating situation of law and order in the state.
The BJP State Chief Sukanta Majumdar said, “Our peaceful protest will continue for 72 hours against the state government’s inability to tackle the violence. Why is chief minister Mamata Banerjee not calling paramilitary forces?”

The state Police didn’t allow Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of opposition in Bengal assembly, to visit violence-hit areas in Howrah. He said, “This is a violation of my fundamental rights” and would go to High Court to appeal against it. Later he joined the party leaders in their sit-in protest.
Appeal for stopping ghastly acts of violence
The Chairman of Bengal Imams Association Md Yahiya had to come out and issue a video message for peace. He made an appeal to the Muslim community to stop this act of arson and violence in the garb of protecting the honour of Prophet.
Md Yahiya said, “You are resorting to arson and violence in the name of protecting the honour of the Prophet. This is unacceptable. Is the Prophet’s name being honoured when police are raiding your homes for your acts and arresting you? These protests must stop immediately. There is no need for it.”

The gory scenes of violence on several streets of Bengal hint that the state government has failed miserably in upholding the law and order in the state. Also, it is foolhardy to think that the Bengal government would shun its Muslim appeasement politics and take harsh actions against rioters and communal bigots. If the state government sticks to this the only resort that the Hindus can pray for is President Rule in Bengal which seems to be the only sane thing to stop this madness.
