The Covid-19 induced lockdown had brought severe problems for migrant labourers across the country. Millions of migrants were forced to walk to reach home, and those who could not go back to the home found it hard to meet their basic needs like a two-time meal, cloth and other necessities. In order to curb the problems of migrant labourers and people working in the unorganised sector, Narendra Modi led ruling government had launched the e-Shram platform to provide financial support to them. And, the government’s e-Shram portal has regulated the unorganised sector.
PM Modi’s e-Shram Card Scheme
On August 26, 2021, the e-Shram portal was launched by Modi Government to assist the labourers in finding suitable work as per their skills. The workers looking for work can take advantage of the scheme by enrolling themselves through e-Shram card registration form 2022 on the official website.
As of now, more than 15 crore workers have enrolled on the portal. A database of informal sector employees is being prepared to aid the government in providing benefits of various social security and other welfare initiatives to labourers.
On December 25, Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav reported that “Every third worker in India’s informal sector is now registered on the e-Shram portal, with the total number of registrations crossing 15 crores in just four months.”
As per the latest data, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, and Jharkhand are the top five states in terms of registration. Out of these, 52.56% are women while men make up 47.44%.
How the workers will be benefitted?
It is obvious that the scheme has emerged as a ray of hope for those who were left unemployed after the pandemic hit the nation. There exist various advantages, including the money that would be provided if accidental death happens. If the insured person dies, the nominee will get Rs 2 lakh.
If someone loses both of his/her hands, feet, or eyes in an accident, he/she will be benefitted with Rs 2 lakhs. Moreover, if he/she loses sight of one eye or is disabled in one leg or hand, he/she will also be provided Rs 1 lakh.

Unorganised Sector
Indian economy is largely unorganised, with 80 per cent of workers working in this sector. These employees are vulnerable to every difficulty relating to education, health, insurance, pension, etc. It is very important to provide social security to people working in the unorganised sectors.
The Modi government is focused on making India a true welfare state, which the Congress government has promised over the last 70 years, but has not been able to achieve in its almost 60 years rule.
