Guaranteed Income Plan vs FD for the 30% Tax Bracket

Guaranteed Income Plan vs FD for the 30% Tax Bracket
Share on FacebookShare on X

Most people park their safe money in fixed deposits without thinking twice about it. The rate is clear, the bank is right there, and it just feels secure. But once your income puts you in the 30% tax bracket, FDs start to look a lot less attractive than the headline rate suggests. A big chunk of the interest simply goes to tax. That’s usually when people start asking whether a guaranteed income plan from a life insurer would actually leave them with more money.

Why Does the 30% Bracket Make Such a Difference?

FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate, every single year. For FY 2025-26, the 30% rate kicks in above ₹10 lakh under the old regime and above ₹24 lakh under the new regime, following the changes in Budget 2025. Add the 4% cess and you’re actually paying 31.2% on that interest, a bit more if surcharge applies to you. Someone in a lower slab barely notices the tax. You will.

What You Really Keep From a 7% FD

Here’s the part people don’t usually work out. A 7% FD, taxed at 31.2%, leaves you with roughly 4.8% a year. If prices are going up by around 5% a year, your money is basically standing still. And the tax is due each year even if you never touch the interest and just let it roll over. From April 2025, banks also deduct TDS once your bank interest crosses ₹50,000 in a year, or ₹1 lakh if you’re a senior citizen, though what you finally owe still depends on your slab.

So What Is a Guaranteed Income Plan?

It’s a savings policy from a life insurer, and it’s pretty simple once you see how the money moves. You pay premiums for a fixed period, say 10 or 12 years. After that, the insurer pays you a fixed income for another set period, maybe 15 or 20 years, and some plans add a lump sum at the end. Every amount is written into the policy on day one, so it doesn’t change if interest rates drop later. A guaranteed income insurance plan also comes with life cover, which means your family gets a death benefit if something happens to you during the term.

When the Income Is Actually Tax-Free

This is the whole reason the comparison matters for high earners. Under Section 10(10D), payouts from a life insurance policy are tax-free if the policy meets a few conditions. The big one is that for non-ULIP policies issued from April 2023, your total yearly premium across all such policies has to be ₹5 lakh or less. Go above that and the income over and above what you paid in becomes taxable. The premium generally also needs to stay within 10% of the sum assured. The death benefit is tax-free no matter what. If you’re on the old regime, the premium itself also counts under Section 80C, and so does a five year tax-saver FD, but both share the same ₹1.5 lakh limit.

How Do You Compare the Two Fairly?

Don’t compare the FD’s headline rate with the plan’s return, that’s apples and oranges. Guaranteed plans show their return as an IRR, which changes with your age, how long you pay premiums, and the payout option you pick. Insurers have to give you a benefit illustration before you buy, and the exact IRR is right there in it. Now work out your break-even. If a 7% FD leaves you about 4.8% after tax, the plan only makes sense if its tax-free IRR is higher than 4.8%. If your bank is offering 7.5%, the bar goes up to about 5.2%. That one check tells you most of what you need to know.

The Catch Is the Lock-In

This is where FDs win, and it isn’t close. You can break an FD whenever you want and lose a little interest. A guaranteed plan expects you to keep paying for the full term. Stop early and the surrender value can be far lower than what you’ve put in, especially in the first few years. So only use money you’re sure you won’t need until the payouts start. If there’s any chance you’ll need it for an emergency, keep it in an FD.

Are Both Equally Safe?

Both are about as low risk as it gets in India, just protected in different ways. Bank deposits are insured by DICGC up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, interest included. Life insurers are regulated by IRDAI and must keep solvency margins so they can meet what they’ve promised. The guarantee is only as good as the insurer behind it though, so stick with a well-established company that has a solid record of settling claims.

What Usually Works for People in This Bracket

Most people end up using both. Keep your emergency fund and anything you might need in the next few years in FDs, since you can get to that money quickly. Long-term money with a fixed purpose, like extra income after retirement or a child’s college fees, is where guaranteed plans can make more sense, as long as you stay under the ₹5 lakh premium limit. Many of these plans let you choose when the income starts and how long it lasts, so you can line it up with the goal. Just remember neither one grows much, so keep some money in growth investments too.

In the 30% bracket, the question isn’t which rate looks bigger. It’s how much you actually take home after tax. Work out your post-tax FD rate, check the IRR on the plan’s benefit illustration, and think honestly about whether you can leave the money untouched for that long.
