Has Political Ambition Crossed the ' Lakshman Rekha ' by Dragging the Army Into Politics?

Army debunks AI-manipulated video of Lt Gen Girish Kalia; says China “control” claim is false

Why Is the Army Moving to Terminate a Major Over Alleged Affairs, Without a Court-Martial?

The controversy surrounding Arunachal Pradesh has once again raised serious questions about the responsibilities of political parties when national security and the credibility of the armed forces are at stake. Recent developments have seen opposition leaders face criticism over the circulation of misleading videos and claims concerning Chinese activities along the India-China border. The Indian Army has publicly debunked videos falsely suggesting that Chinese forces had taken control of Indian territory and that soldiers were being denied essential supplies. The episode has intensified the political confrontation, prompting an uncomfortable but necessary question: how far can political rivalry go before it begins to undermine national interests?

The issue is particularly sensitive because Arunachal Pradesh occupies a strategically important position along India’s disputed border with China. Any suggestion that Indian territory has been lost, or that soldiers deployed in difficult conditions are being deprived of essential resources, can create public anxiety and affect confidence in the country’s defence establishment. Such claims therefore demand rigorous verification before they are shared with millions of people on social media.

According to reports published on October 27, 2026, the Army identified one widely circulated video as digitally manipulated footage falsely attributing statements about Chinese control over parts of Arunachal Pradesh to Lieutenant General Girish Kalia. The original footage, the Army clarified, came from a 2023 briefing concerning counter-infiltration operations in Jammu and Kashmir. Another video showing Chinese commercial vehicles was also misrepresented as evidence of an unauthorised border intrusion, even though the footage was from the designated trade point at Nathu La in Sikkim. These clarifications exposed how unrelated or manipulated visuals can be repackaged to create an alarming narrative about national security.

The controversy has drawn a sharp response from Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, who demanded an apology from the Congress for sharing the disputed material. The political confrontation escalated further when party representatives defended the broader concerns raised by the posts. The episode has consequently become more than a dispute over individual social media uploads. It has turned into a debate about political accountability, the spread of misinformation and the line separating legitimate criticism of the government from the circulation of demonstrably false claims about military affairs.

Opposition parties have every right to question the government over border security, alleged incursions and the preparedness of the armed forces. In a democracy, scrutiny of the executive is indispensable, especially when national sovereignty is involved. However, criticism must be supported by credible evidence. When a political organisation shares manipulated footage or presents an unverified allegation as an established fact, it risks misleading citizens and weakening informed public debate. The responsibility is greater, not smaller, when the claims concern soldiers serving in sensitive border areas.

The strategic importance of Arunachal Pradesh makes this distinction especially critical. China continues to assert territorial claims over the region, while India firmly maintains that the state is an integral part of the country. In such circumstances, fabricated claims about territorial losses or military failures can be exploited by hostile information campaigns. That does not mean every inaccurate post is part of a foreign conspiracy, nor does it justify treating every government critic as an adversary. It does mean that political actors should exercise exceptional caution before amplifying material that could distort the public understanding of a sensitive border situation.

The central question is whether the episode should be dismissed as merely a political stunt or treated as a matter requiring legal scrutiny. The answer should depend on the evidence, the circumstances and the applicable law, rather than on partisan outrage. Deliberately fabricating military statements, knowingly disseminating false information or engaging in conduct that meets the elements of a criminal offence may warrant investigation. But criminal liability cannot be established simply because a political statement is embarrassing, misleading or hostile to the government.

Calls for a sedition case must also be approached with legal precision. India’s sedition provision under the former Indian Penal Code, Section 124A, was not carried forward in that form under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which came into force on July 1, 2024. The new criminal law contains Section 152, addressing acts endangering the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India. Whether any conduct falls within that provision must be assessed by investigating authorities and, ultimately, the courts on the specific facts. The circulation of a false video does not automatically establish the elements of such an offence.

A firm response need not mean an indiscriminate criminal case. Authorities should establish who created the manipulated material, who circulated it, what those individuals knew about its authenticity and whether the evidence supports action under an applicable law. Political parties should issue corrections and apologies where their claims have been conclusively disproved. Social media platforms, meanwhile, must respond responsibly to demonstrably manipulated content without becoming instruments of partisan censorship.

Ultimately, Arunachal Pradesh deserves better than becoming a prop in a contest for political advantage. The armed forces must remain above partisan manipulation, while elected representatives must retain their right to question the government on matters of national security. The Lakshman Rekha should be clear: scrutiny is democratic, but knowingly manufacturing or spreading falsehoods about the military cannot be excused merely as political messaging. Protecting national security and protecting democratic freedoms are not opposing objectives; both require truth, accountability and the rule of law.
