The Indian Navy’s senior leadership will gather at Nausena Bhawan in New Delhi from September 29 to October 1 for the second Commanders’ Conference of 2026, the Navy said in a statement ahead of the event. The three-day meeting is the service’s apex forum and is held twice a year. Here is what is on the agenda.
What is the conference for?
The conference brings together the Navy’s senior leadership, including Operational and Area Commanders travelling from outside the capital. They will review operational preparedness at the military-strategic level and engage with senior government functionaries through an institutionalised mechanism.
The Navy said the meeting will underline its role in protecting India’s maritime interests, including energy security, at a time when conflicts continue in West Asia. It pointed to its ongoing Operation Urja Suraksha and said its conduct of the mission, along with its emergence as a credible maritime force, strengthens its standing as a preferred security partner in the Indian Ocean Region and beyond.
The Defence Minister will share his vision and guidance on national maritime perspectives and on what the government expects from the Navy. The Chief of the Defence Staff and the Chief of the Army Staff will also interact with naval commanders, with the stated aim of fostering synergy and integration among the three services.
Which areas will be reviewed?
On the following days, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan and the Commanders-in-Chief will go through the Navy’s main focus areas. These include operations, materiel, logistics, human resources and training. They will also examine the induction of niche technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data analysis, autonomous and uncrewed systems, and cyber operations. The Navy said the aim is to absorb cutting-edge warfighting concepts and speed up technology adoption.
The leadership will also assess overall preparedness with a view to optimising force levels and improving combat readiness. The Navy said this will be guided by three foundational pillars summed up as JAI: Jointness, Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) and Innovation. These are tied to the government’s goals of self-reliance and a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
The Navy said it continues to operate at a high tempo and remains committed to being a combat-ready, credible, cohesive and future-ready force.
