Communists Warn Vijay Government Could Collapse Without Left Support

Communists have issued a pointed warning to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, saying the state government could lose its majority if the Left parties withdraw their external support. The warning was issued by Communist Party of India (CPI) senior leader and former Tamil Nadu state secretary R. Mutharasan, who also criticised the TVK government over the manner in which issues raised in the Legislative Assembly are being handled.

The remarks have placed the political arrangement supporting the TVK government under renewed scrutiny. According to the report, Communists are providing support from outside the government rather than functioning as formal members of the ruling alliance. Mutharasan argued that this external support has political significance because the government does not have an absolute majority on its own.

Mutharasan’s warning was particularly direct. He said that if the CPI and Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPM, were to withdraw their support, the Assembly and Council of Ministers would no longer have the necessary backing. He also referred to the Governor while describing the possible consequences of such a development. His comments were reported amid growing disagreements between the ruling party and Left leaders.

The Communists’ latest criticism also focused on the functioning of the Legislative Assembly. Mutharasan alleged that the Chief Minister and ministers were diverting attention from issues raised by legislators instead of providing direct answers. He argued that questions concerning public issues should receive clear responses from the Chief Minister or the minister responsible for the relevant department.

The statement followed criticism from TVK leaders, including Aadhav Arjuna, directed at the Left parties. Mutharasan questioned the basis for the criticism and maintained that matters raised by MLAs should be addressed through proper debate in the Assembly. The exchange reflects a widening public disagreement between the government and parties that have nevertheless continued to provide external political support.

The Communists’ position is significant because their relationship with the TVK government is different from a conventional coalition arrangement. The CPI has previously maintained that it is not formally part of an alliance with TVK while continuing to support the government from outside. Mutharasan has also indicated that the CPI remains part of the DMK-led alliance while extending external support to the TVK administration.

The Communists have also expressed reservations about giving the TVK government an unconditional commitment for its full five-year term. Earlier in September, CPM Tamil Nadu state secretary P. Shanmugam said his party would continue offering suggestions to the government on public-welfare issues but could not guarantee support for the entire five-year period. He said the party’s future position would depend on the stand taken by the TVK.

That earlier statement had come after the CPM declined to participate in a TVK meeting involving parties supporting the government. Shanmugam said the CPM would not join the proposed meeting, while also criticising Vijay’s performance in the Assembly. He argued that debates in the House should remain focused on the subjects under discussion and that ministers should respond directly to questions raised by Opposition members.

The latest remarks therefore underline an important distinction between supporting a government and being part of its governing coalition. External support can allow a government to remain in office while giving supporting parties greater freedom to criticise its decisions. At the same time, the possibility of withdrawing that support can create uncertainty over the government’s legislative strength.

For Vijay and the TVK leadership, the episode highlights the importance of maintaining working relationships with parties whose support contributes to the government’s position in the Assembly. For the Left parties, the statements indicate that support is not necessarily unconditional and may depend on the government’s conduct and policy decisions.

The political situation will ultimately depend on whether the CPI and CPM maintain their existing arrangement or decide to alter their position. For now, Mutharasan’s remarks have brought the question of legislative stability back into public discussion. The Communists have made clear that their external support should not be interpreted as an irreversible commitment, while the TVK government faces continuing scrutiny over its handling of Assembly debates and broader political disagreements.
