The Ram Mandir in Ayodhya has once again become the centre of a heated political exchange after Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav alleged that crores of rupees collected as donations for the temple were missing, triggering a swift and categorical rebuttal from the temple administration.
In a post on social media platform X, Akhilesh Yadav termed the alleged discrepancy in donation funds as “extremely shameful” and said it was a matter of concern for devotees across the world. He demanded that the judiciary take suo motu cognisance of the matter, arguing that it directly concerns the faith of the global Sanatani community. He also questioned the silence of the government, describing it as “suspicious,” which further intensified the political reaction to his remarks.
However, the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust firmly rejected the allegations, stating that its financial systems are fully accounted for and subject to regular audits. General secretary Champat Rai clarified that the trust undergoes periodic internal audits along with verification processes conducted in coordination with the State Bank of India. He added that no significant discrepancy has been found in any audit conducted so far.
According to the trust, donations collected at the Ram Mandir are processed through a structured system involving multiple donation boxes placed across the temple complex. The funds are counted under established procedures and reconciled under banking supervision, ensuring documentation at every stage. Officials maintained that this system is not only routine but also designed to ensure transparency in handling public offerings.
The controversy has also reopened familiar political fault lines surrounding the Ram Mandir, including references to earlier phases of the temple movement and the opposition’s positioning during key moments of its construction and inauguration. These aspects have once again entered the political narrative, adding a historical dimension to the present dispute.
While opposition leaders have sought greater scrutiny and transparency over temple finances, the trust has maintained that the allegations are unfounded and politically driven. It has reiterated that its operations remain transparent and compliant with established financial and administrative norms.
For now, the issue remains firmly within the arena of political confrontation, with competing claims dominating the discourse, even as the trust continues to assert that the financial integrity of one of India’s most closely watched religious institutions remains intact.
