Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, “India may play a role in bringing peace to West Asia if circumstances permit” today. He made the remarks amid rising tensions between Iran and the United States.
Importantly, Singh said it was “possible” that India would one day contribute to peace in the region. He added that the country could succeed in such an effort. Furthermore, he linked this possibility to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic approach. According to him, the Prime Minister has appealed to both sides to end the conflict. At the same time, he continues to follow a balanced position on global issues.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts between Iran and the United States have stalled again. A second round of talks, scheduled in Pakistan, collapsed. This happened after disagreements over Iran’s nuclear enrichment programme.
Talks Face Fresh Setback
Against this backdrop, US President Donald Trump announced a two-week extension for negotiations. He said Iranian representatives were given additional time to present a unified peace proposal.
Moreover, Trump stated that the move followed requests from Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. They had urged restraint to keep diplomatic channels open. In addition, he said the pause would remain until Iran presented a coordinated position.
However, the situation remained tense. Earlier, Trump had said he “expected to be bombing”. Later, he shifted course and extended the diplomatic window. Therefore, the uncertainty around the conflict increased further.
Iran Rejects Extension
On the other hand, Iran rejected the extension. It called the move a tactic to delay action. In response, Mahdi Mohammadi said on social media that “the losing side cannot dictate terms”.
Furthermore, he warned that continued pressure would be met with a response. He also stated that the continuation of the “siege” would trigger retaliation. As a result, Iran’s position appeared more hardened.
India Keeps Position Open
Against this backdrop, Singh’s remarks indicate that India is keeping the possibility of a future role open. However, no formal mediation effort has been announced.
Overall, his comments highlight India’s preference for dialogue-based diplomacy. At the same time, they reflect a cautious approach to a complex and evolving geopolitical situation.
Therefore, as negotiations remain stalled, India has kept its position flexible. It continues to leave room for engagement if conditions for peace efforts improve.
