National Security Advisor Ajit Doval held a series of high-level meetings today with Saudi Arabia’s senior leadership during his visit to Riyadh, reaffirming India’s focus on strengthening bilateral ties and engaging closely on regional developments.
Doval, who arrived in Riyadh on Sunday, met Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan, Energy Minister Abdulaziz bin Salman and National Security Advisor Musaed Al-Aiban. According to the Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia, the discussions covered bilateral relations, the regional situation and other issues of mutual interest.
He was received at the airport by India’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Suhel Khan, and Saudi Deputy Minister for Political Affairs Saud Al-Sati.
Focus on Regional Developments
The meetings reviewed ongoing cooperation between India and Saudi Arabia while also addressing the evolving situation in West Asia. The Saudi Press Agency said,” Doval and Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan discussed areas of cooperation and reviewed recent regional developments.”
The visit comes amid continued uncertainty in the region. A possible second round of talks between the United States and Iran is expected this week in Pakistan, following an earlier round held on April 11 and 12 that concluded without any agreement.
Energy Security Remains Key
India’s engagement with Saudi Arabia holds particular significance given the kingdom’s role as one of India’s top three energy suppliers, alongside Russia and Iraq. The ongoing situation in West Asia has raised concerns over potential disruptions to energy supplies, especially through critical routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.
The visit is part of a broader outreach by India to key partners in the region. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently visited the United Arab Emirates, while Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri travelled to Qatar, reflecting a coordinated diplomatic effort to maintain stability in energy partnerships.
Diaspora and Strategic Interests
Saudi Arabia is home to nearly four million Indians, making regional stability an important consideration for New Delhi. India has consistently emphasised the need for safe and unimpeded passage of merchant shipping and has reiterated its position in favour of resolving conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy.
Continued Diplomatic Engagement
Doval’s visit to Riyadh follows his meeting on April 17 with Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council Secretary Rustem Umerov. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the discussions focused on bilateral relations and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with India reiterating its position supporting a peaceful resolution through dialogue.
The visit displays India’s continued diplomatic engagement with key global and regional partners as it navigates evolving geopolitical challenges while safeguarding its strategic and economic interests.
