The Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Thursday released an ambitious roadmap for modernising India’s armed forces, highlighting plans to create dedicated entities for data analysis, drone operations, and geo-spatial mapping.
The document, “Defence Forces Vision 2047: A Roadmap for a Future-Ready Indian Military”, was formally launched by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on March 10 and made public on Thursday.
Space, Cyber Commands and ‘Sudarshan Chakra’
As part of the plan, full-fledged commands for space and cyber operations are to be established. An expanded air defence system, named “Sudarshan Chakra”, is expected to be operational by 2030.
The roadmap highlights the expansion of ballistic missile defence (BMD) and air defence systems to protect economic and strategic assets, as well as civilian installations, against multi-domain threats. Analysts note that India has already tested a BMD system and aims to enhance it further under the Sudarshan Chakra initiative.
New Forces for Modern Warfare
The vision document proposes creating a defence geo-spatial agency, a dedicated data force, a drone force, and a cognitive warfare action force. Existing divisions handling space will be expanded into a full space command to ensure effective control of operations.
The plan also focuses on dominating the electro-magnetic spectrum, enabling forces to communicate, detect, and disrupt an adversary’s communications, radars, and navigation systems.
Technological development and indigenous research are priorities, aiming to achieve self-reliance in advanced military capabilities. The roadmap also stresses the need for dual-use infrastructure and creating “surge” capacities to manage prolonged, high-intensity operations.
Three-Phase Roadmap
As per reports, the plan is divided into three phases. Phase I (now to 2030) focuses on organisational restructuring, multi-domain operations, border control, and deterring conflict while containing standoffs and terrorism.
Phase II (2030 to 2040) aims for deeper integration of space and cyber capabilities with traditional domains, data-driven operations, and dominance in aerospace and maritime domains.
Phase III (2040 to 2047) envisions transforming India’s armed forces into a world-class military, leading in technology and capable of freedom of operations across all domains.
The roadmap also emphasises India’s presence in the Indian Ocean Region through robust maritime, underwater, and air domain awareness, ensuring strategic reach and security across critical regional waters.
What It Means for India?
“Vision 2047” signals India’s intent to emerge as a technologically advanced, self-reliant military power capable of safeguarding its strategic interests across land, air, sea, cyber, and space domains.
It builds on previous initiatives such as the creation of the Integrated Defence Staff, the BrahMos missile programme, and the Strategic Forces Command, which strengthened India’s missile and nuclear capabilities.
By focusing on indigenous development, multi-domain integration, and advanced surveillance, the plan could enhance deterrence, boost domestic defence industry growth, and ensure India can respond effectively to future security challenges.
