BJP supporters were attacked in central Kolkata on Saturday as they marched towards the Brigade Parade Ground for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally, barely five kilometres from Girish Park. Stones were hurled at activists, several vehicles were damaged, and at least one police officer and a BJP leader sustained injuries, according to eyewitness accounts. Despite the unprovoked assault, party supporters maintained discipline and pressed on towards the venue, underlining their commitment to the BJP’s development-driven agenda.
Activists allege that Trinamool Congress workers instigated the clash by first throwing stones and hurling abusive language at marchers. “Stones were thrown at us without any provocation. They also abused us,” said a BJP activist, describing the tense and intimidating scene. Eyewitnesses confirmed that while skirmishes broke out, BJP supporters were marching peacefully, chanting slogans in support of the prime minister.
TMC Accused of Political Intimidation
BJP leaders reported that stones were also thrown near the residences of local party activists in Girish Park, a move widely viewed as an attempt to intimidate voters ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections. TMC supporters denied the allegations and accused BJP activists of provoking the confrontation. Multiple eyewitness reports, however, highlight that BJP activists were clearly targeted while en route to the rally, reflecting the tense political environment in Kolkata.
Police Step In to Restore Order
A significant police presence quickly brought the situation under control, ensuring the safety of marchers and local residents. Authorities confirmed that law enforcement separated the rival groups and restored calm, allowing the BJP rally preparations to proceed uninterrupted.
PM Modi’s Development Agenda in West Bengal
The rally is the culmination of the BJP’s statewide ‘Parivartan Yatra’, showcasing the party’s development-focused vision. Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to unveil and lay foundation stones for projects exceeding Rs 18,000 crore, covering infrastructure, urban development, and social welfare initiatives. The investment highlights the central government’s commitment to tangible progress in West Bengal, contrasting with attempts at political disruption witnessed earlier in the day.
The Girish Park clashes underline the increasingly tense political climate in the state, yet BJP supporters’ resolve remained undeterred. Observers note that such incidents are likely to reinforce public perception of the party as disciplined, development-oriented, and resilient in the face of political intimidation, further energising voters ahead of the elections.
