Police on Sunday (December 21) recovered a Chinese-made assault rifle scope near the National Investigation Agency (NIA) headquarters in Jammu, triggering a security probe in the region.
The incident came to light after a six-year-old boy was seen playing with the scope in Jammu’s Asrarabad area. Police immediately questioned the child’s parents, who said the boy had picked up the object from a nearby garbage dump earlier in the day.
Following the recovery, Jammu Police launched a search operation in the Sidhra area, as the device can also be mounted on a sniper rifle. Senior police officers visited the spot to assess the situation.
Police later detained a 24-year-old man from Samba district in connection with the recovery, according to news agency PTI.
“Jammu (Rural) Police recovered a telescope capable of being mounted on a weapon from the Sidhra area,” a police spokesperson said, adding that teams from the Special Operations Group (SOG) are actively investigating the matter.

The recovery comes amid heightened security concerns, especially after a Chinese-manufactured GPS tracking device was recently found on a migratory seagull near Karnataka’s Karwar coast, close to the strategically important INS Kadamba naval base.
Police urged citizens not to panic, stating that agencies are closely monitoring the situation.
In a separate case, police took Tanvir Ahmad into custody in Samba district after reportedly finding a Pakistani phone number on his mobile phone. Officials said Ahmad is a resident of Anantnag in south Kashmir and is currently living in Samba.
