India Successfully Test-Fires Agni-Prime Missile from Rail-Based Launcher, Capable of Hitting Targets 2000km Away
Share on FacebookShare on X

In a major boost to India’s defence preparedness, the country successfully test-fired the Agni-Prime Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) from a specially designed rail-based mobile launcher. The test, conducted on Thursday, marks the first time such a launch has been carried out from the Indian Rail network, placing India among a select group of nations capable of deploying mobile canisterised missile systems with cross-country mobility. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced the achievement, describing it as a milestone in strengthening India’s strategic deterrence and self-reliance in defence.

A First-of-its-Kind Rail-Based Launch

The Agni-Prime test from a rail-based launcher is a landmark development in India’s missile programme. Unlike traditional static launch pads, this system allows the missile to be fired directly from a mobile rail platform, drastically reducing visibility and enhancing survivability. The system has been designed to provide the Strategic Forces Command with rapid reaction capability while ensuring mobility across the rail network without restrictions or preconditions.

Advanced Features and Strategic Reach

The Agni-Prime, also referred to as Agni-P, is an advanced missile designed to cover a range of up to 2,000 km. Equipped with next-generation guidance, navigation, and control systems, it is a canisterised weapon, which enhances storage, mobility, and readiness. Its dual-stage solid-fuel propulsion system and improved accuracy make it a crucial addition to India’s strategic arsenal. With these features, India strengthens its ability to counter threats from multiple fronts while maintaining credible deterrence.

Congratulatory Message from Defence Minister

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh took to his X handle to congratulate the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), and the Armed Forces on the achievement. He lauded the teams for successfully executing the first-of-its-kind rail-based mobile launcher test. Singh emphasised that the success is not just a technological milestone but also a reflection of India’s growing self-reliance in defence capabilities under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Strengthening Deterrence and Mobility

The Agni-Prime is part of India’s continuous efforts to strengthen its deterrence posture by making its missile systems more agile, mobile, and survivable. The rail-based launcher ensures the missile can be deployed discreetly and swiftly, reducing the chances of pre-emptive detection by adversaries. This development comes at a time when India faces evolving security challenges, underscoring the importance of indigenous advancements in strategic weaponry.

A Giant Leap in India’s Defence Preparedness

The successful test of the Agni-Prime missile from a rail-based launcher represents a significant leap forward in India’s strategic capabilities. By combining mobility, stealth, and advanced missile technology, India has enhanced its deterrence while showcasing the strength of its indigenous defence sector. As the nation continues to pursue self-reliance in defence under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, the Agni-Prime stands as a symbol of technological excellence, strategic foresight, and national security preparedness.
