As the country celebrated its 79th Independence Day, a powerful expression of patriotism emerged from one of the most remote corners of the world, as an Indian man unfurled the tricolour in the frigid cold temperatures of Antarctica, soaking in the very patriotic spirit and fervour of the country, he calls home.
In a video that has now gone viral, Mohit Sharma, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, could be seen proudly waving the Indian tricolour amid the icy expanse of the southernmost continent.
Shared on social media with the caption, “Happy Independence Day from the coldest place and the southernmost continent on Earth,” the video has struck a chord with viewers, amassing nearly 55,000 views.
The clip captures Sharma braving sub-zero temperatures and treacherously slippery ice as he unfurls the flag with unwavering pride and confidence.
Social media users were quick to praise his gesture. One user wrote, “Those slippery ice and your strength and confidence. You make us feel more proud, bro.”
While, another added, “Salute to you, brother. Working and unfurling the Indian flag in such cold weather.”
In a previous video from the site, crew members—dressed in high-visibility jackets—were seen clearing snow and using a crane to erect a flagpole, ensuring the national flag could be hoisted with honour. A tricolour was also displayed prominently on one of the station’s cabins.
Antarctica is recognised as the coldest place on Earth, with temperatures often plunging below -60°C. At Russia’s Vostok Station, located on the high inland ice sheet, the temperature plummeted to a record -89.2°C on July 21, 1983.
Despite these extreme conditions, Sharma’s tribute served as a moving reminder that the spirit of India lives on—even in the farthest reaches of the globe.
