In a move aimed at fostering patriotism and preserving the memory of local heroes, the Delhi government is considering renaming its government schools after soldiers from the city who were martyred in the Kargil War. The announcement was made by Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood during a Kargil Vijay Diwas event held at Shivaji College, Delhi University, on Saturday.
A Tribute Rooted in Education
Speaking to a packed auditorium of students, faculty, and families of the fallen soldiers, Minister Sood said that the initiative seeks to connect young minds with real-life stories of bravery and sacrifice from within their own communities.
‘Many of our brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in Kargil were not only from Delhi but also alumni of this very college,’ he noted. Among those remembered were Captain Sumit Roy, Captain Hanif-ud-Din, and Captain Anuj Nayyar, all former students of Shivaji College who lost their lives during the 1999 conflict.
‘Renaming schools after such heroes will serve as a daily reminder to students of the true meaning of duty, courage, and national service,’ Sood added.
Legacy Beyond Textbooks
The Education Minister emphasized that the goal is to embed values of civic responsibility and patriotism more deeply within the public education system. ‘The stories of our martyrs shouldn’t be confined to a few pages in a textbook,’ Sood said. ‘They should be visible in the very institutions where our children learn and grow.’
This symbolic gesture, he explained, would give permanence to the legacy of the martyrs and keep their memories alive in the hearts of future generations.
Families and Students Moved
The event also witnessed emotional moments, particularly as Mrs. Swapna Roy, mother of Captain Sumit Roy, was present among the attendees. She expressed gratitude for the recognition and shared memories of her son’s bravery and determination to serve the nation.
Students and faculty members alike responded positively to the proposal, calling it a meaningful step toward building a stronger connection between educational institutions and the nation’s armed forces.
Embedding Patriotism in Policy
The renaming initiative is expected to be part of a broader educational reform drive focused on instilling national pride and civic awareness. While the final details of the plan are yet to be formalized, officials confirmed that consultations with local communities and families of martyrs will play a vital role in the renaming process.
As Delhi commemorates the sacrifices of its sons on Kargil Vijay Diwas, this proposed tribute stands as a powerful reminder that the stories of valor from the past can and should inspire the future.
