Dalai Lama Asserts Authority Over Succession, Rejects Chinese Interference in Reincarnation Process

In a bold statement, the Dalai Lama reaffirms that only the Tibetan spiritual community will determine the 15th Dalai Lama, challenging China's efforts to control the selection

15th Dalai Lama to be appointed, no chinese interference

In a major setback to China’s ambitions to control Tibetan Buddhism, the Dalai Lama on Wednesday made a decisive and unequivocal statement: the tradition of his reincarnation will continue, and the world will indeed witness the emergence of the 15th Dalai Lama. More importantly, he made it crystal clear that the process of identifying his successor will be guided solely by spiritual traditions and procedures outlined by him, leaving no room for China or any other political authority to interfere.

According to Tibetan Buddhist belief, the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation exists to perpetuate his spiritual legacy, promoting compassion, wisdom, and the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism. The current Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is the 14th in the line and will turn 90 on July 6. For years, speculation had surrounded the Dalai Lama’s plans for his succession, with many expecting him to clarify how his successor would be chosen, particularly around his 90th birthday.

Following a meeting with senior Buddhist monks on July 2, the Dalai Lama issued an official statement reaffirming that the institution of the Dalai Lama will not be abolished and that the next Dalai Lama will be chosen through traditional methods.

The Appointment Process of the Dalai Lama

The process for identifying the next Dalai Lama is steeped in centuries-old traditions. According to Tibetan Buddhist beliefs, the Dalai Lama is considered a reincarnation of his predecessors, a spiritual leader and embodiment of the Bodhisattva of Compassion, Avalokiteshvara. The process of selecting a new Dalai Lama is both deeply religious and intricate, involving spiritual rituals, consultations, and various tests to ensure the correct identification.

The process followed for the appointment of the next Dalai Lama includes:

Responsibility of the Gaden Phodrang Trust: The primary responsibility for identifying the next Dalai Lama rests with the Gaden Phodrang Trust, which is the office of the current Dalai Lama. This trust has been entrusted with the task of overseeing the succession process.

Consultation with Tibetan Buddhist Authorities: The Gaden Phodrang Trust must consult with the heads of various Tibetan Buddhist traditions, senior lamas, and other key spiritual figures who have the knowledge and wisdom to discern the signs of the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation.

Spiritual Rituals and Tests: Once a potential candidate is identified, the child must undergo various spiritual tests. These include recognizing personal belongings or symbols of the previous Dalai Lama, as well as other spiritual signs. The child is also tested for specific traits that align with the Dalai Lama’s character and teachings.

Oath of Dharma Protectors: In line with Tibetan Buddhist traditions, the process must be done in consultation with and under the protection of trusted, oath-bound Dharma protectors, who play a significant role in safeguarding the Tibetan spiritual lineage.

Final Confirmation: After the identification process, the final confirmation and recognition are made by the Gaden Phodrang Trust, which has the sole authority to affirm the new Dalai Lama.

Interesting Facts About the Appointment Process

Historical Precedent: The search for the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation dates back centuries. Each time a Dalai Lama passes away, senior lamas and spiritual leaders use signs, visions, and dreams to locate his reincarnation. This process was first formalized with the search for the 2nd Dalai Lama in the 16th century.

The Golden Urn Controversy: In 1792, the Chinese Qing Emperor, Qianlong, introduced a controversial system where the name of the Dalai Lama’s successor would be drawn from a golden urn. However, this practice was widely criticized for its political interference, and the Tibetan authorities have long rejected it as an illegitimate method of selection.

Traditional Tests: One of the most famous tests in the Dalai Lama selection process involves presenting a young candidate with items that belonged to the previous Dalai Lama. If the child selects the correct items, such as personal belongings or religious objects, it is considered a strong indication that they are the true reincarnation.

The Role of the Oracle: Tibetan Buddhists also consult with oracles, such as the Nechung Oracle, who is believed to have the ability to communicate with spiritual forces and provide guidance on the selection of the next Dalai Lama.

Relocation of the 14th Dalai Lama: After the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1950, the 14th Dalai Lama fled to India in 1959, where he established a government-in-exile and has lived ever since. This led to the significant question of whether the 15th Dalai Lama might be identified outside of Tibet, possibly among Tibetan refugee communities in India or elsewhere.

Statement Against Chinese Interference

The Dalai Lama also emphasized that his recognition of the 15th Dalai Lama will not be subject to any external influence, particularly from the Chinese government. He stressed that the sole authority to recognize his future reincarnation rests with the Gaden Phodrang Trust, following the traditional and spiritual processes that have been in place for centuries.

“The sole authority to recognize the future Dalai Lama’s reincarnation rests with the Gaden Phodrang Trust. No one else, especially any government or institution, has any right to interfere in this process,” the Dalai Lama stated.

This assertion directly challenges China’s ongoing efforts to influence the succession of the Dalai Lama and its broader strategy to exert control over Tibetan Buddhism. Beijing has previously indicated its intention to appoint its own choice for the next Dalai Lama, but the Dalai Lama’s firm declaration of religious autonomy sets the stage for a potential confrontation over the future of the institution.

In conclusion, the Dalai Lama’s reaffirmation of the continuation of the Dalai Lama institution, along with his rejection of foreign interference, reaffirms the traditional and spiritual authority of the Tibetan Buddhist community in choosing the next Dalai Lama. The process is deeply rooted in Tibetan Buddhist customs, ensuring that the selection remains a sacred and autonomous practice.
