The sacred city of Puri witnessed a massive spiritual spectacle today as the annual Jagannath Rath Yatra 2025 commenced with traditional rituals, overwhelming devotion, and a robust administrative setup to ensure smooth execution. Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra, embarked on their iconic chariot journey from the historic Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple amidst chants, hymns, and a sea of worshippers.
Ceremonial Start and Massive Turnout
The festival began in the early hours with the Mangala Alati, followed by the elaborate Pahandi ritual where the deities were ceremoniously brought out of the sanctum and placed onto their chariots. Though slightly delayed, the rituals were conducted with traditional fervor.
By the afternoon, the Chhera Pahanra- a symbolic act of humility performed by the Gajapati King of Puri was carried out, after which the chariots began their 2.6 km journey along the Grand Road (Bada Danda) toward the Gundicha Temple.
Authorities estimate over 15 million devotees from across the globe will attend the week-long celebrations.
Unprecedented Security & Modern Infrastructure
With such massive footfall, the Odisha government left no stone unturned in deploying a multi-layered security system:
Over 10,000 personnel, including CRPF, NSG, and special task forces, have been stationed across the town.
275 AI-enabled CCTV cameras, drone surveillance, and an integrated control room are actively monitoring the crowd and procession.
Temporary medical camps, hydration kiosks, shaded waiting areas, and sanitation facilities have been installed across major points along the route.
In addition, the official “Shree Jagannatha Dham” mobile app has been launched to provide pilgrims with live updates, ritual schedules, and map-based navigation assistance.
Cultural, Religious & Commercial Significance
The Rath Yatra holds immense religious importance in Hinduism, symbolizing the annual visit of Lord Jagannath and his siblings to their aunt’s home. Scholars describe it as a journey of divine outreach where gods come out of their temple to bless devotees.
In a new development this year, the Rath Yatra also became a ₹200 crore advertising and branding opportunity for devotional sponsors. However, commercial activities remain strictly regulated to maintain the sanctity of the occasion.
What’s Ahead
The deities will reside at the Gundicha Temple for seven days, with Bahuda Yatra (return journey) scheduled for July 4, 2025.
The famous Suna Besha ritual, during which the deities are adorned with gold ornaments, will be held on July 5.
The festival will conclude with Niladri Bijaya, the ceremonial return of the deities to the Jagannath Temple.
