West Bengal is once again in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. Under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s rule, the state has seen a disturbing surge in crimes against women. The recent gang-rape of a law student inside a reputed college in Kolkata’s Kasba area has reignited fury and brought back chilling memories of similar horrific crimes. The Bharatiya Janata Party has now called for mass resistance against the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, urging voters to uproot the current regime in the upcoming elections, blaming it for fostering a climate of impunity.

BJP leader Amit Malviya called the crime “horrific” and claimed that reports point to TMC involvement as well. “Rape has turned into a routine tragedy in Bengal. The horror of RG Kar hasn’t faded, and yet such heinous crimes continue. Mamata Banerjee has failed Bengal’s women. It’s time for change,” Malviya posted on X.

Law Student Gang-Raped Inside College Premises

On the night of June 25, a female student of South Calcutta Law College was allegedly gang-raped inside the institution between 7:30 pm and 8:50 pm. According to the FIR, the accused include Manojit Mishra (31), a former student employed as temporary staff, along with two others — Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), both associated with the college. The survivor filed a formal complaint on June 27, and swift action was taken by Kasba police, leading to the arrest of all three individuals.

Police have seized the mobile phones of all three accused, which are now part of the ongoing investigation. The accused were produced in the Alipore court and have been remanded in police custody till July 1. The Vice Principal of the college, Noyna Chatterjee, confirmed Manojit’s prior association with the institution and emphasised that the governing body was informed immediately. “We want the harshest punishment for those guilty,” she said.

A medical examination of the survivor was conducted at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital.

“The witnesses were examined and their statement were recorded. The P.O (place of occurrence) was visited and it was guarded for pending forensic investigation,” a senior police officer said.

Amit Malviya Links Prime Accused to TMC’s Top Brass

In a major political escalation, BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya alleged that Manojit Mishra, the prime accused in the Kasba gang-rape case, has direct links to top Trinamool Congress leadership. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Malviya wrote: “OUTRAGEOUS! Manojit Mishra, one of the prime accused in the brutal gang-rape of a college student in Kasba has direct links with the most powerful in the TMC: MP Abhishek Banerjee, Councillor Kajari Banerjee (Mamata Banerjee’s sister-in-law) and State Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya

Malviya’s tweet has set the tone for a politically charged debate in the state, with BJP demanding a probe into the alleged political connections of the accused and accusing the ruling party of shielding perpetrators.

“This is not just a crime. This is a cover-up of the highest order. TMC is a party of rapists and protectors of rapists. We will not allow political power to bury this crime. We will not allow Mamata Banerjee’s regime to silence the voice of justice. The BJP stands firmly with the victim. We will fight relentlessly until justice is delivered.” Malviya added

BJP Slams TMC: ‘West Bengal is Becoming a Nightmare for Women’

The BJP wasted no time in going on the offensive. Party leaders launched scathing attacks against the TMC regime, citing the growing number of sexual violence cases under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership.

A BJP statement warned: “Rapes have become a daily horror. The state machinery continues to fail its daughters. We will fight tooth and nail to end this rape culture that has flourished under TMC’s protection.”

A Year After RG Kar Horror, No Lessons Learnt

This incident comes just 11 months after the widely condemned rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College in August 2024. A post-graduate medical trainee was brutally assaulted and killed inside the seminar hall of the hospital. Her body was discovered in the early hours of August 9, sending shockwaves across the country and prompting an uprising within the medical community. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested, found guilty, and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Despite national outrage, stricter safety measures in public institutions remain elusive. The latest Kasba incident has reopened wounds, with people questioning if Bengal’s women are any safer today.

Shocking Surge in Rape Cases Since RG Kar

According to crime data compiled from local police sources and news reports, West Bengal has reported over 1,800 rape cases since the RG Kar incident in August 2024. Many of these cases involve minors and occur in educational institutions, hospitals, and even inside government-run shelters. Human rights organisations have repeatedly flagged the alarming increase, warning that the state is sliding into a dangerous abyss. Yet, administrative inaction and political shielding of accused individuals continue to hamper justice.

Will Bengal’s Daughters Get Justice?

The brutal gang-rape in Kasba is not an isolated case it is symptomatic of a larger rot that has set in under Mamata Banerjee’s governance. Repeated crimes, administrative apathy, and politicisation of justice have brought Bengal to a tipping point. With the BJP promising a “zero tolerance” policy towards crimes against women, the political stakes have never been higher. As the 2026 elections draw closer, the question looms large: Will Bengal’s daughters finally get justice, or will the cycle of silence and brutality continue?
