The investigation into the mysterious death of Raja Raghuvanshi during a honeymoon trip in Meghalaya has taken a major turn. Police have confirmed that Raja’s wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, and her alleged partner, Raj Kushwaha, have both confessed to being in a romantic relationship.
According to reports quoting Vivek Syiem, Superintendent of Police in East Khasi Hills, the pair has also admitted their involvement in Raja’s murder. The case is being handled by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), which has so far ruled out the need for a narco test, saying sufficient evidence has already been collected.
No Need for Narco Test, Say Police
While Raja’s family had requested a narco-analysis test on Sonam, police officials have dismissed it as unnecessary.
“They’ve already admitted to the crime. We’ve reconstructed the crime scene with their help and collected physical evidence. There’s no need for a narco test,” said SP Syiem.
“These tests are only used when evidence is lacking—and they are not legally admissible in court,” he added.
He emphasized that the investigation is being built on solid evidence to ensure a strong legal case, rather than relying on confessions alone.
Suspected Motive: A Relationship and Future Plans
Though the precise motive hasn’t been officially stated, police suggest that Raja may have been murdered to clear the way for Sonam and Raj to continue their relationship without interference—possibly also tied to shared financial or business interests.
“They wanted Raja out of the way due to their personal relationship and social pressures. That appears to be the driving factor,” Syiem explained.
Focus Shifts to Indore Apartment Owner
Investigators are now looking into Lokendra Tomar, a businessman based in Indore who owns the flat where Sonam stayed after the crime. She was later arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur district.
Authorities are investigating why a bag left by Sonam in the apartment was removed. That bag is believed to have contained a country-made pistol, her mobile phone, Raja’s gold jewelry, and about ₹5 lakh in cash. Police suspect an attempt was made to tamper with or hide key evidence.
So far, the jewelry Sonam allegedly took back from Meghalaya has not been recovered.
More Arrests and Court Appearances
Three individuals linked to the Indore flat — property dealer Silome James, security guard Balveer, and apartment owner Lokendra Tomar — are expected to be brought before a Shillong court soon. They may also face further questioning regarding evidence concealment.
Raja Raghuvanshi was reported missing during a honeymoon trip in Sohra (Cherrapunjee) in May. His body was discovered days later in a ravine near Weisawdong Falls. What initially appeared to be a missing person case soon turned into a suspected premeditated murder, with Sonam and Raj named as key suspects.
Police now say they are close to completing their investigation and plan to file a chargesheet with substantial, court-admissible evidence.
