West Bengal is once again engulfed in violence, with Murshidabad district at the epicenter. Islamic fundamentalists, under the pretext of protesting against the Waqf Amendment Law, have unleashed targeted attacks on Hindus and their properties. So far, three people have lost their lives in the violence, including a father and son who were idol-makers of Hindu deities. The situation has become so dire that the Calcutta High Court has had to order the deployment of central paramilitary forces. In response to the escalating chaos, the BJP has drawn a striking comparison between CM Mamata Banerjee and British Viceroy Lord Curzon.
The father-son duo killed by Islamic extremists in Murshidabad’s Dhuliyan area were Har Govind Das and Chandan Das. They made idols of Hindu gods and goddesses. A mob stormed into their home, attacked them with sharp weapons and sticks, and brutally beat them to death. Har Govind’s eyes were reportedly gouged out. Another young man injured in the violence later succumbed to gunshot wounds during treatment.
Reports suggest that the violence erupted on Friday (April 11, 2025) after Jumma prayers, when an enraged mob began attacking Hindu households across Murshidabad. According to India Today, many Hindu homes were attacked, looted, and vandalized. In a horrifying account, Manju Bhagat, wife of Hindu trader Amar Bhagat, told the media:
“The mob tried to break our front door. When they couldn’t, they entered through the back. They smashed our motorcycle, looted our valuables, furniture, mattresses, and TV. We were praying to God and hiding on the roof, terrified. All I could think of was, ‘What if something happens to my daughter?’”

The violence was so extreme that even an ambulance wasn’t spared. A witness told India Today, “The Muslim mob set an ambulance on fire and beat the driver severely. We were hiding in our homes in fear. I kept my parents, wife, and children locked inside. These attackers weren’t outsiders—they were local people.” CCTV footage showed a Hindu family’s car being destroyed by the rioters.
Another victim told ANI, “They vandalized and set fire to several vehicles, including my bike. My uncle’s shops were looted and damaged. We couldn’t sleep all night due to fear. When all this was happening, the police were nowhere to be seen. When the mob attacked the police station, even the officers fled.”
BJP leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Rakesh Sinha strongly condemned the violence, accusing CM Mamata Banerjee of enabling the chaos. “This violence is not only happening with government backing, but it’s part of a well-planned conspiracy to divide Bengal,” he said. Drawing a historical comparison, Sinha added, “Mamata Banerjee is walking the same path as Lord Curzon, who once divided Bengal. The violence happening in Bengal is state-sponsored and protected. The constitution grants everyone the right to protest peacefully, but in Bengal, Hindu homes and shops are being deliberately targeted.”
Suvendu Adhikari, BJP MLA and Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, also lashed out at the Mamata government. He claimed that due to fear of Islamist mobs, over 400 Hindus were forced to flee from the Dhuliyan area of Murshidabad. The displaced families crossed the river and took refuge at Lalpur High School, located in the Deonapur-Sovapur Gram Panchayat area of Vaishnavnagar in Malda district.
Adhikari added, “Religious persecution in West Bengal has become a bitter reality. TMC’s appeasement politics has emboldened radical elements to such an extent that Hindus are now being forced to flee from their own homes in their own country. This is a glaring example of the breakdown of law and order in the state. It’s shameful that people are having to flee just to protect their lives.”
He further appealed to the central paramilitary forces, state police, and district administration:
“I urge them to immediately intervene and ensure the safe return of these displaced Hindu families. They must be protected from this jihadi terror. Bengal is burning. The social fabric is tearing apart. Enough is enough.”
