In response to India’s strong measures following the Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistan has taken a series of retaliatory actions, including blocking its airspace for all Indian airlines and closing the Wagah border. The decisions were announced after a National Security Committee (NSC) meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, attended by top civilian and military leadership.
In an official press release, the Pakistani Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that the strength of the Indian High Commission in Islamabad will be reduced to 30 diplomats and staff members, effective 30 April 2025. Additionally, all trade with India—including transit to or from third countries via Pakistan—has been suspended.
The Wagah border post has been closed to cross-border movement from India. The statement clarified that Indian nationals who have already crossed into Pakistan with valid endorsements may return through Wagah, but no later than 30 April 2025. All SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) visas issued to Indian nationals have also been suspended and deemed cancelled immediately.
These moves follow India’s recent announcement suspending the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) of 1960 with Pakistan until Islamabad takes credible action to cease support for cross-border terrorism. The Indian government has also ordered the expulsion of all defence, naval, and air advisors from the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi.
Both countries have decided to reduce the size of their respective missions, with India following Pakistan’s lead in cutting the number of personnel to 30. India has also shut down the Integrated Check Post at Attari and revoked SVES visas issued to Pakistani nationals, instructing those already present in India to leave within 48 hours.
The crisis remains heightened as both nations scale down diplomatic ties and follow hardline stances. Islamabad’s actions signal a stern response to India’s diplomatic and strategic measures following the Pahalgam attack.
