Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) shocking 50-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at Chepauk has sparked intense debate, particularly regarding MS Dhoni’s baffling decision to bat at No. 9. The legendary captain, known for his finishing prowess, was held back until the 16th over, by which time the match had already slipped away. While his quickfire 30* off 16 balls showcased his ability to still strike at an elite level, it also raised serious concerns about CSK’s strategic planning and Dhoni’s role in the team moving forward.
CSK’s batting struggled from the outset, losing wickets at regular intervals. By the time they were 80-6 in the 13th over, it was clear that an experienced batter was needed to stabilize the innings. Yet, instead of sending in Dhoni, the CSK management opted for Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin ahead of him. The move bewildered fans and experts alike, with former cricketers Robin Uthappa and Irfan Pathan questioning the rationale behind it.
I will never be in favour of Dhoni batting at number 9. Not ideal for team.

Manoj Tiwary was particularly vocal in his criticism, arguing that the CSK coaching staff lacks the courage to insist Dhoni bat higher.
“If a player like Dhoni, who scored 30 off 16 with a strike rate of 190, had come in earlier, the game might have been different,” he pointed out.

Virender Sehwag, on the other hand, sarcastically remarked that Dhoni “came in too early,” suggesting his batting position was predetermined regardless of the match situation.
Furthermore, CSK management’s decision to continuously send MS Dhoni lower down the order has brought back the memories of old time when Dhoni was adamant to show doors to Indian legends including Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir.
For years, Dhoni has been synonymous with tactical brilliance, yet this decision seemed devoid of any logical reasoning. It raises a crucial question: Is Dhoni unwilling to take responsibility when the team needs him most? His reluctance to bat higher cost CSK not only the match but also a significant dent in their net run rate (NRR), which could prove costly later in the tournament.
Beyond the immediate criticism of his batting position, the larger question looms: how much longer will Dhoni continue playing in the IPL? While he remains an icon of the game, his insistence on batting lower raises doubts about his role in the team. If he no longer trusts himself to guide the innings, should he still be a part of the playing XI? CSK must address this issue soon. If Dhoni is to continue, he needs to step up when required. Otherwise, it might be time for the franchise to prepare for a future without their former talismanic captain.
