In another crackdown on right-wing leaders, Romanian police detained right wing populist leader Călin Georgescu on Wednesday (26th February). Georgescu won the first round of the presidential election in November 2024 before the constitutional court annulled the second-round run-off in December. He was taken into custody while on his way to register as a candidate for the upcoming May election. He was stopped in traffic by the police and taken to the Prosecutor General’s Office in the capital city, Bucharest.

Following hours of questioning, prosecutors placed him under judicial control for 60 days. He has been put for multiple charges, including incitement to actions against the constitutional order, dissemination of false information, and involvement in fascist, racist, or xenophobic organizations. This is an old tactic of the liberal leaders and system; after losing fight on the ground or ideological front, they try to ban, arrest and label allegations on right-wing leaders to delegitimize them. A few days earlier, Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni had come down heavily on the global leftist establishment for falsely painting popular right wing leaders like Trump, herself, Modi, Xavier Millei of Argentina as “threat to democracy”. Her video slamming the left quickly went viral on social media and the recent ugly showdown rather the purge of right wing populist leader Georgescu rings even louder in the Romanian showdown.

Investigators accuse Georgescu of publicly promoting individuals guilty of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, as well as advocating for fascist and xenophobic ideologies. Under judicial control, he is required to remain in Romania, notify authorities of any change in residence, refrain from using social media to post prohibited content, report regularly to the police, appear before prosecutors and judges when summoned, and not own or carry weapons.

Upon leaving the General Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday evening, Georgescu met his wife, Cristela Georgescu, and a large group of supporters who raised chants, “Georgescu, president!”

Speaking to the press, he said, “Nothing surprises me anymore. It reminds me of the mentality and the communist system of the 1950s. So, there is no difference. We move forward. Surely, we, the people, are this power, we are the energy, we are Romania. We will not kneel in any way. As I said, nothing surprises me, and we will continue to fight for freedom.”

Elon Musk also weighed in on the situation, reacting on social media after Georgescu was brought in for questioning. Sharing a post on X, he wrote, “They just arrested the person who won the most votes in the Romanian presidential election. This is messed up.”

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu later issued a statement in response to the unfolding events. Given the tense electoral context, he emphasized that judicial bodies must present “solid and impeccable evidence” in an investigation that involves a potential candidate in the upcoming election.

“Only the communication of clear and impeccably substantiated evidence can ensure that this criminal investigation is not diverted into an electoral campaign for a specific candidate,” Ciolacu said in an interview with Digi24.

The case against Georgescu appears to be part of a larger police operation involving the alleged financing of his campaign by Romanian mercenary Horațiu Potra. Authorities conducted 47 home searches across Sibiu, Mureș, Ilfov, Timiș, and Cluj counties, targeting 27 individuals and four headquarters linked to suspected fascist, racist, and xenophobic activities.

Investigators claim the accused individuals are associates of Potra and contributed financially to Georgescu’s campaign while allegedly establishing an organization with extremist characteristics. Experts say that Georgescu is being targeted because he has gained popularity, and people like him, and this is a threat to the so-called liberal government of Romania, with which the EU sides. This was the same thing that happened with AfD in Germany; when the party’s popularity increased in Germany, the German government put a motion to ban the party in their parliament.

Georgescu, who initially denied connections to Potra before images of them together surfaced, accused authorities of political intimidation. He called the investigation an abuse of power and an attempt to block his candidacy.

“The communist-Bolshevik system continues its heinous abuses! Today, at 6 AM, they once again stormed dozens of locations, waking children from their sleep. They are trying to fabricate evidence to justify the election theft and to do everything possible to block my candidacy for the presidency. They have been searching for three months without success,” he wrote on Facebook.

His detention sparked protests outside the General Prosecutor’s Office, with hundreds of supporters gathering as police erected barriers around the building. The right-wing populist parties supporting him, including AUR and POT, called the situation an “abuse by the totalitarian state.”

AUR leader George Simion condemned the authorities, stating, “Georgescu was taken in for questioning just an hour and a half before a scheduled meeting to complete his candidacy file for the presidential elections. This action is intended to deliberately block his candidacy.”

The severity of the charges could significantly impact Georgescu’s bid for the presidency on May 4 and 18. The previous presidential vote was canceled after President Klaus Iohannis declassified intelligence documents alleging that hundreds of TikTok accounts had been activated in Georgescu’s favor. Romanian intelligence blamed Russia for backing his campaign through cyber-attacks and online influence operations. However, no substantial evidence suggests such involvement from Russia. It looks like a conspiracy to take down the right wing populist leader, fearing his win in the upcoming election.

Iohannis, who had planned to stay in office until a successor was elected, resigned earlier this month ahead of an impeachment vote. His decision to annul the elections was widely criticized by opposition politicians at the time, with Georgescu’s team now drawing parallels to his prosecution.

“Where is democracy now?” his team posted on X, tagging prominent figures such as Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and U.S. Vice President JD Vance. It is true that democracy is not something one puts all government apparatus to target a winning candidate; rather, it facilitates the candidate a free and fair chance to put his/her ideologies in front of the citizens and let them decide what they want. Here, the government and judiciary are the ones who are deciding what is wrong and right for the Romanians in the election.

Also Read: Meloni, Modi, Trump: Italian PM fuels fire as Right-wing wave rattles global left

Earlier this month, Vice President JD Vance accused Romania of annulling elections based on “flimsy suspicions” from intelligence agencies and external pressure.

Georgescu’s legal battle may ultimately reach the constitutional court, which previously barred another right-wing, pro-Russian candidate, Diana Sosoaca, from running. That decision faced considerable backlash, raising concerns about judicial impartiality in Romania’s increasingly polarized political landscape. As the legal proceedings unfold, Georgescu’s fate in the May elections remains uncertain, with his supporters vowing to continue protests against what they see as a politically motivated crackdown. At the same time, the true face of liberal government in Europe is also exposed to the world and gives several reasons to support right-wing leaders across the globe. The hypocrisy of liberal parties is being displayed.
