In a significant move, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has renamed Karimganj district of the state to Sribhumi to honour Rabindranath Tagore.
This renaming follows a series of similar changes to village names in the state.
“Over a 100 years ago, Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore had described modern day Karimganj District in Assam as ‘Sribhumi’- the land of Maa Lakshmi. Today the #AssamCabinet has fulfilled this long-standing demand of our people,” the Chief Minister said in a post on X.

According to reports, the decision was taken during a meeting of the state cabinet on November 19.

During a press conference in Guwahati, CM Sarma also indicated plans to “continue to change names” that were not based on actual words or lacked historical relevance.
He also shared a picture that stated that the decision to rename Karimganj as Sribhumi would “reflect the expectations and aspirations of the people of the district”.
Kripanath Mallah of the BJP is the current MP from Karimganj constituency.
In September, the union government had renamed the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Port Blair as Sri Vijaya Puram, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah saying that it was done to realise “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to free the nation from colonial imprints”.
